Recently finished building a 2"X72" grinder. I found some plans online and welded it up. I got the wheels and platen from OBM and had most of the other steel tubing and plates in my iron pile. I am using an AJAX 2hp single phase 220v motor turning 1725 rpm, running 1805 SFP if my college dropout math is correct, that once ran out old shop air compressor. Much to my surprise it runs quietly and tracks very well.

This is a huge step up from my old 4"X36" 1/2 hp craftsman. I sure can make some mistakes in a hurry now !

I'm practicing on some mild steel to get a feel for it, looks like I'll be doing some full flat grinds for a while. I'm having trouble with clean crisp bevels but hopefully I can improve upon that in time.
Just wanted to share a bit and once again say thanks for the plethora of information on this site.

Nice, hope it does well for you.

Good job and looks good. If that's a 4" diameter drive wheel, your math is good - a 3.75" (3.85"?) diameter drive wheel the belt speed matches the shaft RPM, so the 4" drive wheel belt speed is just over the shaft RPM.

Well done. The main concern is the tracking. As long as that is solid then you can work around any other issues. You can also add a larger drive wheel & VFD later on when your budget allows.
BTW, aren't you in LA? If so what town?

Bunkie, central part of the state.

I had to shim out my tool arm wheels as the platen was offset by about 3/16", no big deal just odd since they came from the same mfg. It has tracked true with all the belts I've tried so for.
Haven't bogged it down either, I could stall my old one with two fingers.

I'm just north of Pineville on Hwy. 165 about 7 miles from the Pineville Walmart. If you ever wanna come for a shop visit, give me a call at the number below.

Thank you, I'd love to. I am a sugarcane farmer and we are in harvest until the first of the year but I'll be in touch after that if the offer still stands.

Good job on it. I built my own grinder as well. There is just something satisfying about using a tool that you made with your own hands.
