So I decided to break down and...

That mod looks just about perfect and very comfortable to work with. Nice pics also

I was fondling my SAR last night. I'm amazed that after removing that much steel on the butt-end, you'd still have a pretty long handle.

It's like a mega-sized Vex.

awesome mod.., and the 50mmm f1.4 is a joy to use, for sure...I've just bought a month ago one 50/1.4 Nikkor...great low light lens.:thumbup:

Nice thread, and very cool mod.

Too bad that the SAR knives are so thick. Although, that does make sense in light of the name and the presumed role this knife will fill.

Just have to make do with my CABS, and wait for the Anorexic BOSS Jack. :D

Thats pretty light use for just "breaking it in" ;)

I think you needd to baton something, or chop, possibly skin something. :D
Beautiful mod though, it just begs being used

I did baton a lil' 3" log later that evening, and the next day too...
even moved up to a full sized, split log, and used a baton to knock it down to a bunch of 1" pieces.
I didn't really need to do that... but couldn't resist. ;) :D

Exactly!
There is A LOT of handle on the SAR4... and still plenty after the mod.

Come on... do it! You know you wanna send one in. :D

The 1.4 is a really nice low light lens... and moving up to a full framed sensor camera makes it even better in low light.

These shots were taken in my basement with one 60W bulb on.

Don't get me wrong... I like the skinny's too.
But the SAR4 at .220" has it's place too (for me anyway). :)

My CABS is patiently waiting for me to use her too.
But I just picked up a custom shop hollow ground...
and it may just bump the CABS aside for what I use next.

The hollow ground versions are

I'm sure I've asked this before, but how is the balance now?

I'd love to send it in, along with my BOSS Streets proto, have Garth pull the handles, drill out some skeletonization under the slabs and slap them back on. That knife is perfect except it's too butt-heavy.

The balance point is now just behind the forward tube fastener... just where it should be IMHO.

Besides being too butt heavy, there was too much distance between the cutting edge
and my index finger for a blade this length. she's now perfect in my mind...
you can now choke up on the blade, and much better balance for one-handed manuverability.

Oh, and I've asked the custom shop about skeletonizing an existing knife before...
I was told it can't be done after the heat treat because the steel is too hard. :(
There are a few that I would like that done to... including my new hollow ground Boss Street.

But it never hurts to ask.
