So I finally broke down and bought another 110...

... after many years without one. The 112 was doing the job, so why did I need another 110? Well, I saw a 100th anniversary one at Walmart today and had to get it. So now I have 2 questions:

1. What does the "T" stamp mean on the opposite side of the tang?

2. How can they make a knife of this quality for $29? This has to be the best value in the knife world. I'll bet there are cigars that cost more than that.

Well the "T" is the easy part...they knew you were going to buy it so the Buck guys marked it that way. T is for Torz. ;)

Interesting, perhaps Joe can shed some light on the "T". The mark for knives that are a bit off is "FB" meaning Factory Blemish, and they are not generally available.

If Walmart can sell them for so little then they are taking a loss on them or Buck is. My first 110 was one that came in a blister pack along with a flashlight and it was $29.95 from Sam's Club in 1999. (That was the one that got me started collecting the darn things. Like a good potato chip, one is never enough.) :) Anyways, I'll bet someone took a loss on that too.

Take care,

The T is a 2003 year code.. we were playing with the stamps and put the T on the back side of the blade on about 12000 110 blades. We really didn't like the placement, so we went back to the year code next to the model # on the left side of the blade. There probably aren't very many anniversary knives with the T stamp as we used the anvil most of the year on this project. Cheap and collectable.. :)

I do know the line that makes the 110's is a great bunch of operators, very detailed. It makes it hard for me to find rejects.. :)
(which is just fine by me.. ). They directly contribute to the low cost..

Enjoy..

Rats, Jeff stole my thunder!:)
He is correct that about 12,000 of the 110's have that date code on the back. Happy hunting for those that collect 110's or "oddball" type variations.
I might also mention here that for the discerning collector there are about 6500 119's "out there" that you might want to find. It seems that the supplier of our red micarta, used for the handle spacers on 119's, ran out of red. He did have yellow micarta handy though...
These 119's are one of my favorite collectible variations in a while. :)

Take care,

There ya go - - - - changing the rules again!!!!:D :D

Hey Joe - are the "T" blades on any of the Diamondwood 110's or only on the standard production Centennial 110's?? I want a better idea what I should be looking for....

Thanks!!!!

Hey Jeff,

I have seen a number of knives with the "FB" on them but so far the 110 remains absent from that list.

Yesterday I was able to find my way to my local Wal Mart where I know the girls at the Sporting Goods counter. They know I am a collector - in fact, I've helped one of them with a knife for her father for Christmas. I asked to see all the 110's they had in stock. She handed me about 5 boxes and 'lo and behold!!!!! The first one I opened, a standard production 110, with the Centennial Medallion in the handle, had a 2003 blade that Joe mentioned, with the "T" stamp on the reverse.:D I checked the others, there was only the one.... Sorry Guys!!! I would have had her put them under the counter and checked here to see if anyone else wanted one.

I forgot about the 119's though. I might have to stop at the store again today.....;)

THANKS for the "heads up" Joe!

Hey Joe -- speaking of collectibles, I sent you a note, please check your email when you hit the office tomorrow :)

Warhawk - The FB mark stands for Factory Blemish. These are knives that have a cosmetic issue, but are still good functional knives. On a product like a 110, we are able to rework most defects, thus the absence of 110's with the FB mark.

Joe - DOH! forgot about the 119, I was gonna post that earlier this month.. I happen to like the yellow trim ones better than the normal color trim. But I'm weird like that.

Gypsy - Good Score!

Jeff - from working in a production plant, I know anytime there is a variance from the standard stock, we have to change the lot number to track which products has which parts, for a number of reasons. I would imagine Buck does something similar. If so, can you give me/us an idea how many of the Centennial 110's were produced with the reverese "T" stamping?? I'm just curious as to the "collectabilty" of these "oddballs."

Thanks in advance!!!!

hehe Gypsy, that is a hard one. There is no visibility in our system for a minor variance such as a stamp style. I'll ask the shop lead how many he thinks they did with the 'T' on the back. We know there were at least 2 of them .. :) I highly doubt that we did all 12,000 blades in the centennial. I will did a little and see what I can come up with.

Jeff

Joe or Jeff,
I understand that some of the 110s with the 2003 "T" year mark on the reverse side of the normal tang stamp are showing up in retail stores. Am I correct in understanding that a small number of these "T" stamps were done on 110s with the Centennial handle medallion and a larger number were done on standard 110s without the medallion? Also, how does the tang stamp read? I suspect BUCK / 110 / U.S.A. but would like to know for sure.
Thanks!

Sitting here looking at my Centennial 110 I see Larry is correct in his assumption.
The tang is stamped in three lines...

BUCK
110
U.S.A.

The 2003 year mark, a "T" is stamped on the reverse side of the blade and, to me, is stamped deeper than usual.

AS for how many of what knife used the reverse stamped blades, Jeff said he was going to dig a little for some more info. I think he's dug far enough to find some gold and he's afriad he'll have to share it with us if he gives an answer.

On the subject of the 119's with the yellow spacers.... I have been informed that the yellow spacers were used on 119's with, and without the Centennial Blade marking. Just some more toys for us to go looking for....
BTW - I agree with Jeff, I LIKE the yellow spacers. It gives the knife a fresh look!!!

Hope this helps.....

Got a 110 coming in the mail that has a "FB" stamp and signed by CJ and Chuck in '05.
Why would they engrave/sign a FB stamped unit?
Goose.
BCCI 1190

I think Buck sells them out of their Company Store. Possibly bought on a day Mr.& Mr. Buck were doing signings. Great way to turn cheap knife into a collectors piece.

Cheap giveaways at conventions??? BCCI meetings??? VIP tours??? ;)

Why waste revenue generators when the FB's were probably destined for the furnace...

Ahh, Scott and Trax...makes sense.
This one I'm wanna see for grins is because the seller said no obvious blemish could be determined. Like a double dog dare ya....
Stay tuned...

Goose, I have a 191 Zipper (marked with the Anvil date stamp - 2002) with camo handle and sheath that I bought off eBay. The seller mentioned that is was a blem - marked FB on the back of the blade. Before I bid on it, I checked with Joe Houser, who indeed comfirmed that it was a factory blem. In fact, Joe knew the seller! The seller assured me I would not be ab le to find the blem, much like your seller is saying now. Ya know, I can't tell ya how many times I have gone over that knife looking for something wrong. I can't for the life of me find it. Me thinks, knowing what I do about Buck, that there is a chance that their blems are better than some other top of the line knives.
