So I find myself wanting a Khukri...

now when yer quoting lengths, is that blade length or or overall length?

To give you an idea of the proportions:

A 20" khukuri will have about a 14.5" blade (usually).

A 15" khukuri will have about a 10.5" blade (usually).

Remember these are hand-made, so lengths and proportions can vary a little. It's been my experience with H.I. that the khukuris tend to be 0.25" to 1.0" longer than they are listed.

Hey guys,

I appreciate all the great replies.

I will mostly use this on the trails. To move big brush out of the way, or split/cut firewood as well. I might also use it to make shelter.

Now this probably wouldn't be on my belt. More likely strapped to my pack. (Depends on what I'm doing really.)

With that information what would recommend? :) (length, model?)

I still like the M-43. I just want to make sure I'm making a good decision.

Interesting when you consider the following claim on their web site:

Doc

Sounds like they made one for martial arts practice and not what its original intended purpose is. Not withstanding the famed gurkha's use of them. Probably why it's so light. Should have stopped wasting their time and just made falcattas or yataghans then... :)

EDDAKA.
Cpl Punishment is right, go for the one that calls to you. The M43 is a good chopper and should work fine for your intended use. Chopping and splitting-no problem. IMO it's more forward weight and lack of a ring on the handle makes it feel like it wants to slide out of my hand more than other models. Some sports tape should take care of that, though.

An AK or CAK 16.5-18" will fill the chopping and splitting bill, also. The less commonly available Bonecutter or Ganga Ram Special would work. For carry, personally I'd max at 18" and around 2#. Yangdu has a new shipment to arrive any day now and who knows whats in it.

Look at the pictures of the various models, find the one calling to you and start there. You can branch out to other models later.

khuks are measured point to pommel in a straight line.

I don't think anyone here will tell you an M43 is a bad decision. :D

Also, judging from the sorts of things you described that you'd be doing with your khuk, you could probably also make do with slightly shorter models as well... 16 or 15" AK's, BC's or BGRS's and the like.
