It turned out really well. I mainly presented the information from Cody Lundin's book '98.6 Degrees' - to keep it all in one place and simple. I only had an hour.

We gave away two of Lundin's books and a fairly well stocked PSK / BOB for the car.

I set up a fictitious example of what they might get themselves into and then took them step by step on how to get themselves out of it by using their kit.

They all got a buyers list and I answered a LOT of questions.

I was asked to do the talk at two more places. Hopefully it helps others learn about survival.

This is great... I plan on starting an 'outdoors club' here at the university once things settle down in my life.. and I want to incorporate survival skills etc. Sounds like you (and they) had fun.

That's really cool bro. You're doing some good work spreading the word on this stuff.

So did you use a kit list from Cody's book? Those of us addicted to kits need pictures!

I did use Cody's list. I made a handout for them on typical SAR situations, what will kill them, and then a kit list.

I will post a pic soon.

Did you give this talk as part of a class, or was it extra-curricular? Sometimes I get to have fun talking about one aspect of survival/primitve skills or another if it comes up in the context of what we're covering, but I don't teach anything that allows me to completely go there.

I have this video that I show (taped from PBS years ago) in which a bunch of guys are given only the gear that Roman legionaries would have had, and they have to live like that for a week. They have to do things like make a fire with flint and tinder fungus, and it is 40 degrees and raining much of the time. The students like it and their crackpot teacher gets to talk about bushcraft a little!

This was a volunteer type thing. It is part of a Lifelong Learning program at Lonestar College - Cy - Fair (where I work). I have taught a 'Fire without matches' course, a 'How to build a Survival Bracelet' course, and some others. This one was a BOB course.

I will try and post my power point and word document and then post links here. It was attended by almost 40 people.

Very cool. I would love to see the info on those. I wish simple stuff like that was offered around here.

Any negative reaction?

Really cool. Congrats.
What was the most important lesson that you got from giving the course?

The lesson I learned is that most people haven't even heard or thought about this stuff.

If there was a EMP over America - 100 million would be dead in 2 weeks.

Good stuff Talfuchre - that sounds like a good venue. I'm not allowed to say anything about safety to my students unless it is sanctioned by the WHIMIS/WS&B committee or approved course. Frustrates me as I have grad students engaged in field activities and although they get boat/water craft training (occupational levels) that kind of stuff doesn't cover really basic topics. I wish they all could take a Wilderness First Aid course but costs and time issues preclude that. Plus, Wilderness First Aid, while excellent for medical situations, doesn't really train people on the other basics of survival - navigation, signaling, shelter, water, etc.
