First - I want to thank all of you that helped me in all the questions I asked.

Second - I gave my first survival fire class to about 30 people (professors, students, and community members) Wednesday.

I demonstrated for all of these willing participants how to start a bow drill fire from a branch on our school campus (Hickory). I then demonstrated the Fire Piston, Fresnel Lens, Flint and Steel, and Ferrocerium stick.

I then busted out 8 hand made ferro rod kits and let them have a go at it. They were all able to get fire in a short amount of time with dryer lint and the ferro kit.

I gave these kits away and also we drew a name for a custom bow drill kit (White cedar hearth, two spindles, a nice handmade top rock, bow with 550 cord on it).

The recipient loved her winnings and I will post pics as soon as I get them from the librarians.

What a great time.

Congrats Bro, thats great.
Its cool that they were interested. I tried to get my neighbors interested by a demo of the Bow drill, but they just looked at me and said "neat but don't you have a lighter"

Pics would be awesome:thumbup:

I always love hearing stories of passing this dying art onto others. Nicely done! Good job!

Kevin,

I borrowed parts from your presentation and simplified them quite a bit to pass out to the people at the presentation - I hope that is okay.

The cool part about using hickory is that it was on the campus. I also collected my tinder bundle locally so I could show them how they also could do this with all indigenous materials.
