So I have a tanto now... now what?

I was quite surprised after doing some research, that it seems that the America Tanto came from Cold Steel. I did not know that and just thought it was something that came here like anything else, from people from other countries. Or maybe it came from the mix of American knife makers putting their spin on a traditional Japanese blade. Well I guess that is the case with CS. Everything I find makes clear about it not being a stabber. The tanto design is that of a piercing blade, period. I have ready pages and pages of origination designs. From the original design to what CS started making here in the US to start the movement, it was made as a piercer. Now thats not to say that plenty of custom makers are doing something of a hybrid design to make the piercer, more of an overall design and a bit more friendly for an EDC. For me, I have never liked the Tanto for EDC, a drop point has always been my go to design for EDC. When I was in the military, Tanto was the one I had in ready all the time. If I had to put the blade to test, I wanted to make sure it penetrated with ease and the tanto was a proven knife for that. Not saying I don't think that Tanto has one of the coolest blade lines of most any knife about there. It just looks like it wants to hurt something.

I have a tanto bad monkey and a kershaw tanto. Really like the bad monkey, the kershaw is now a practice sharpening knife for when I need to sharpen the bad monkey

When they first came out , Cold Steel tantos were extremely exotic and sexy . I still have a lot of respect for the pattern and it's offshoots .

Combines great piercing ability with the strength to withstand some prying to retrieve the blade from a skull or spine . Body armor is not that uncommon and everyone (including animal foes) have bones . Punch thru boots, belts , heavy clothes , arms and hands etc .

Not the optimal for utility , but usable for most things .

Still have my old Carbon V Recon Tanto . Missing some black coating , but fully functional after much abuse .

Yup, I actually prefer the cold steel to the kabar tanto, what was it, 1245 or something?

I have heard both Cold Steel and Emerson to be said to be the first company to start using the now famous (or infamous) american tanto. One of them seems to be the first production company to use it. I don't actually know who started making it first. (Anyone know?) However custom makers were doing it first.

Apparently the first person to popularize the american tanto style aas Phil Hartsfield. He was apparently the first to use that style blade and also featured a zero ground chisel grind. That grind is exactly the grind Emerson copied. Though Hartsfields are not ground on the "wrong side" as in better for a lefty.

So true some of those blades lines are just dang sexy. They were vicious looking knives that looked like they meant business. Just about every soldier in my LRSU felt they had to get a CS Recon Tanto. lol. If not for use, but for coolness effect. That Carbon V seems to hold up well. I have seen them put through ringer and nothing more than maybe the finish getting damages. Plus the CS Recon Tanto is thick as well. To me it looks like something took a Cro Bar and put an edge on it lol. Although it may not be exactly like the traditional lines of the ancient Japanese Tanto, it still has that exotic look with a hair shaving sharp blade out of the box.

I couldn't help but notice the Jim Wagner knife. It rang some bells that eventually connected... I remember where I'd heard of him...

http://hockscombatforum.com/index.php?topic=4049.0

That is just the latest, he's been around a while, I think.

Geez, it so looks like an emerson copy.

My main problem with Wagner and his RBB is the silly clip "system" . You can set up the clip with either the glass breaker or a tip that's supposed to make the knife look like a pen , along with the thin clip and low ride . Amateurish and unworkable notion right out of a "Get Smart" episode !

So you're stuck with an thin inadequate clip for the sake of a sales gimmick . Really makes me doubt his claims as an operator .

That little pen top clip works alot better on that little Boker Urban Survival knifelike object.

The Jim Wagner blade pictured above has the infamous "stab this deep to wound" white line on the other side of the blade. It also has this weir blood groove that I have heard is designed to catch the blood and turn it back away from your hand to run it back towards the tip of the knife. Of course this is physically impossible and not what "blood grooves" on any knife do. You can tell by looking at the other side of that knife's blade that Jimmy Wag wasn't aware what a fuller actually is for.

Just look at the bottom picture above of Jim Wagner reality based blades to see the tanto with the most powerful steel ever made!!

Thanks for the posting on Jim Wagner, I got to say I have never heard of him. I got a good laugh. From what I read, he sounds like a REMF Gear whore. Likes to talk like he has walked a mile across no mans land but in fact, it was only on a video game. I hate to tell the man the bad news, but you cant get PTSD from a Ghost Recon game. People like him make me sick. That knife! Reality based knife lol. The Dude has no sense of reality. Does he have any clue how a blood groove like that would react. In order for that to even begin to behave like he says, there would have to be a perfect entrance, while pulling suction, sealed along the edges with blood flowing. So in reality, that only happens on movies. None the less I got a great laugh from the knife "reality based" I can see every 14 year who plays video games wanting one. Looking at his website it is just a bunch of Jim was the first to do this and the first to do that. I call BS on most of that. Also noted it said he left full time law enforcement, that also does not seem to be the case. Maybe that is why I have never heard of the guy. He is not "reality based" in the reality that military people tend not to listen to this crap.

Oh, I could give you a couple of others. Moni Aizik... Ashida Kim... scammers hall of fame.

Spykes please do provide with names such as those. I love to read about gear tec wannabe supercop soldiers. A lot of their BS reads alot like that infamous thread that started the phrase Mall Ninja. The thread with Gecko or whatever. If you haven't read it you guys owe yourself a favour and must go read it.

I think PTSD is thrown around way too much these days. These days PTSD can be attributed to anything. Stubbing your toe for example.

I have been in situations where a person could actually develop PTSD and didn't develop it at all because I didn't let it bother me. I chose not to dwell on bad things that happened in the past and let it ruin my life. Now obviously there are real situations which can actually traumatize a person. That same situation may traumatize one person and not traumatize another. Some people may avoid trauma through good measures and some may avoid trauma through mal-adaptive measures such as alcohol or drugs. I am not saying PTSD isn't real just that it is invoked way too much these days.

Maybe I will have to go train with Moni Aizik. I did Judo for 12 years in my childhood and have connections at the Toronto Jewish Community Centre. Is this guy really a scam artist? He apparently invented Commando Krav Maga. (I would assume this does not mean he invented Krav Maga itself) Many people criticize sport Judo for not being very useful for real combat or street fight situations.

I personally disagree and think that Judo can teach you a lot about fighting because it is one of the few martial arts where you go full strength against each other without fear of hurting one another. It lets you get used to moving and confronting people in those kinds of fights. Especially there are components a lot of the older Japanese teachers teach that are outside the rules of sport Judo but are excellent for self defense. I am not saying Judo or any martial art is the best for "real" combat, just that it is a lot more useful than people realize.

Anyway that rambling is just to ask what you know about Moni Aizik? Is he really a scam artist just in it for the Moni? ($$ Get it?) I want to know because if he is a fraud teaching things to my community he should be exposed! There are a lot of nice but naive Jews here who want to help an Israeli soldier set up shop in Toronto. A family friend of mine helped someone from the IDF's special forces and his IDF sniper friend open up a gym here. Well before long we found out that the special forces guy was embezzling money from her. The sniper guy (who actually seemed like a good guy) got in trouble with the police here and that whole show fell apart. I warned the sniper that you can get in trouble in Canada for just getting into a fist fight at a bar. He didn't believe me or heed my advice clearly.

Anyway I am not trying to derail the thread. Let's get back to having an enjoyable thread about tantos. I just want to know about this Moni guy.

P.S. This Ashida Kim seems like a real piece of work. First off anyone teaching "Ninjitsu" sets off crazy alarm bells. Number two this guy has a site that says if you post a picture of his likeness in a chat room or message board you will be sued for copyright infringement. Elle Oh Elle.

Basically Moni claimed he was Sayeret Golani or Matkal or some other elite unit, (I think it was golani) he was just a PT instructor. His background is indeed judo, which is a good art, IMO, I mean, ippon seioi nage ftw, right? But he claimed he was such a such poohbah in the IDF, when people went a asking, I mean, the IDF is not exactly so big that his contemporaries would not know each other, they found out otherwise.

Tons of this stuff on bullshido.net and other places.

Another guy is Karanek / "Hagannah". I don't believe any one has confirmed he is who he claims he is.

Don't get me wrong, some of their techniques could be useful, I have seen some (not all) of Karanek's videos, some seem reasonable - but there are experts who claim that the like of Aizik have been devising their own techniques out of the air that could be dangerous.

Edit: I tried to find youtubes exposing Aizik but all I see are his offical or videos supporting him. Interestingly, he appeared on a discover documentary on Krav Maga which he does not really represent. Ask any major stream Krav practitioner. Chances are they'll tell you the same thing I am.

Yeah we probably are. Enough has been said on the topic for now. Although in reality this thread has kind of evolved into a comedy thread. However to protect the interest of the forum enough has been said on the Prac Tac like stuff. Apparently Moni has been called out for his BS.

Still though thank you for telling me about it all. I think it is practically an endless source of entertainment. Personally I would be too embarrassed to straight up lie to people about being an ex-super soldier type. Then on top of that sending them into SD situations with techniques I came up with off the top of my head. Some kids had too much fun in the school yard going "throw a punch at me very slowly. Now when he does this you just do THIS!" and never grew up out of it.

Opps ! I actually forgot this ain't Prac/Tac . But , once you bring up the Tanto is hard not to go there .

Still , I think it's good to expose the pretenders whenever possible . Least we be led astray .

Dubious achievement. :p

Still not unsure if actually at all practical ...

Good ergos, G10 is nice, good confidence building early lockup, no lockstick, Very sharp but cuts weird, biasing curving to the right.

For the lols, I'd recommend it. For practical use, nah. :D
