Rut Roh!!! Severe cervical spinal stenosis, spondylosis, and myelopathy related to ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. Essentially it's a bunch of calcification putting pressure on my spinal cord and nerve roots in my lower neck - causes some pain and numbness/tingling. I guess all that drinking and putting my head through walls at the rugby parties in college are catching up to me 30 years later. :D

The real danger of this is the cerebo-spinal fluid is all squeezed out of the spinal canal by the stenosis (narrowing) so there is no longer any protection from severe spinal cord injury from even moderate trauma. Already, even hitting a pothole in the car causes this electric shock to shoot all the way down to my toes. The doctor says this is my spinal cord geting pinched. It's already pinched down to around 30% of its normal diameter in two places.

So he's cutting on my spine Tuesday, Nov. 11. He'll cut in from the front, push my esophagus aside, grind out the C5/6 and C6/7 disks, remove the calcified ligaments inside the canal up against my spinal cord, stick in a couple of bone grafts, and button it all up with a titanium plate (which will match my Citizen Eco-Drive Men's Titanium Perpetual Calendar Watch #BL5250-53L). My wife and daughter have already stopped calling me No-Neck and taken to calling me Iron Man.

After a couple of days laid up in the hospital, I'll be taking 4 or 5 weeks off from work, burning off some of my enormous sick leave balance. I'll probably be spending A LOT of time moderating the Political Arena. :D

Best of luck, Mycroftt.

Who is your neurosurgeon? I may know him.

(no requirement to answer, or you can PM)

Anyway, hope and prayers coming your way.

I'm glad that the new scalpels aren't made of S30V. I hear it has a tendency to chip. :D

Good luck, Mycroftt!

I can't wait to see how moderative style changes when you are on hardcore pain meds. :D

30%!? Holy moly, good thing you caught that in time! Best of luck with the operation and recovery.

(And I almost feel sorry for Political :p)

MY...I had the same surgery in Jan. this year. The hospital stay was overnite
and i was back to work in 2 weeks.

My surgery was a complete success and cured the pain i had been in 24/7
for almost 10yrs.

GOODLUCK !

Best wishes for smooth sailing and a fabulous outcome.

Good luck...I would be nervous but remember we have your back. ( no pun intended). I would check around and see what Drs. are charging for titanium maybe you could bring in your own piece from a knife maker?:D

:barf: Thanks for sharing. :barf:

Seriously, best of luck to you!

Best of luck to you, and God speed in your recovery.

My father had the same surgery back in may, but down in the lumbar region. He's got titanium screws holding the two vertebrea in alignment and artificial discs. For the bone grafts, the surgeon used a liquid synthetic bone.

He's back up to about 85%+ normal now, and is loving his retirement, reletively pain free.

I had basically the same thing done except they used bank bone for the shims between C5 - C6. It was one of the best things to happen to me. The recovery is a bitch and the moving of all the stuff to get in from the front caused me worse pain than the spinal area.

Doing great now. Morphine machine was helpful for a couple of days

Good luck

I wish you the best of luck, hope the surgeon's a good one and hope you recover fast!

Good luck Mycroftt. Hope it all goes well. If you need any follow up care, let me know, I got a dremel and a good assortment of handtools.

I Hope everything goes well for you, mycroft.
Good luck.

We'll be sending good thoughts & prayers your way. Best of luck!

Mycrott. Good luck with the surgery....having just got back to normal from a massive hernia repair, my thoughts are with you. Hang in there.
