So I pulled the trigger on a Needs Work based on the looks..what should I expect?

I have wanted one ever since I saw pictures of it . Glad to hear it can be neutered . No offence to Kershaw , but I would rather have it manual in the Canuckastan legal climate . I suspect its only a matter of time before there is some case law on point .

Chris: The cool thing is that you can adjust the pivot screw tension so that you can regulate how much effort is needed to flip open your NW.

I love this damn 'ugly' knife. I use it all the time at home.
It's so rugged. I cut everything with it. Wire, wood, plastic.
Even had it in the dirt a few times. I just wash it off and keep going.

I've got a black one coming sometime.

Hey, I have been having some problems doing this. I tried adjusting the tension just a little, but nothing happened. I tried twisting it more and more, and it just wouldn't work. Do I need to take off the pocket clip to get to a hidden nut or something?

You probably will have to take off the pocket clip to see what's happening. The end of the pivot is a hex head, and the only thing that holds the pivot in place is a hex shaped recess in the back scale. Now, since Loctite is used on the pivot screw, the pivot will spin in the scale when the pivot screw is turned.

You should try to carefully heat the pivot screw with a soldering iron to soften the Loctite, then try to remove the pivot screw (I don't know why I didn't think of this first.). If that doesn't work, you might try wedging something between the pivot, and the back scale to gain some friction on the pivot. And as a last ditch effort, you may have to modify the pivot to accept a screwdriver. I used my Dremel and a small rotary bit.

Feel free to e-mail me for any clarification at elarski(at)comcast.net

Good luck, and don't forget to let us know how things work out.

Ok, thank you. The hex screw is free-wheeling, I will try heating it up.

EDIT: Ok, so I ended up cutting a slot in the hex side of the pivot screw, and got the knife apart. I fixed the locking problem, and took out the A/O spring. I put the knife together, and no matter what I do, I can't get the knife to flip open using the flipper without using my wrist. What am I doing wrong?

I had a Needs Work as well, and as I am in construction, mine took a beating! It seemed to be asking for more, as I even reshapened the blade after the tip broke off. I began to have the same problem with my hex screw spinning in the handle. I worked at it for awhile with out trying to alter the handle any. After a few tries, I laid it to rest and put my Boker Trance in my pocket. I am having a custom fixed blade made out of D2 for my future work abuse. The Needs Work was a cool little knife, but left me disappointed with its break down ability. A true work knife will get abuse, and dirty. That said, it should break down easy for routine cleaning. The Needs Work did not. I would say it is better referred to as the "Needs Lite Work".
There are better Kershaws for solid work knives! Just my opinion.

Guilo: I'm trying to understand how you're attempting to flip the knife open. Mine opens easy, but some wrist action is still required. I have yet to try any of the actual factory flipper models, but I can't imagine the blade opening any easier than my NW. My Pivot Screw is adjusted light, and doesn't have any play in it.

I meant that I had to use some wrist action to get the knife open, I have my pivot screw adjusted as light as I can without blade play or having the blade off-centered in the handle while closed.

My NW works fine now, thanks for the help Elarski.

i loaned my needs work to a friend who is a police officer here in town. he has had it for about 3 weeks and i called him tonight to see how it was holding up. he said its holding up fine, its still sharp and he uses it every day. he was carrying a s&w auto.

I'll probably order the scale material from KnifeKits.com, or a similar knife parts supplier. I'm leaning towards textured G10, or Micarta; can't decide.
