So I was in a knife store today.....

Lets face it if knife stores paid the help megabucks then we would all be working in one.

Quijebo: Drive on down to La Mesa to Wright Knives for a great selection and a knowledgeable owner operator Dennis Wright. I'm blessed in that his shop is only 4 miles from my house but La Jolla is Wright close for the quality of service you'll recieve.
However being the owner operator dosn't guaranty quality service while I was waiting for my Sebenza I bought from Dennis to arrive, I went on a business trip with a fellow employee to Texas, we went to a independent knife shop and I asked the owner if he had a Sebenza he stated no but he did have several Benchmade / Reeve collaboations. If you're ever in Oregon, check out George and Son Cutlery in downtown Portland, Portland Cutlery in Portland, and Northwest Knives and Collectibles in Salem, Oregon. You will know what it's like to visit a real knife shop.

ive mentioned it before, but here in arkansas,a.g.russel is THE place to buy, look at and plar with knives.allison(the store lady) knows a ton about the knives they sell, she is EXTREMELY pacient when you want to play with them (she didnt get upset when i kept walking around, asking to see this folder, that neck-knife,etc.etc.).a little pricey sometimes, but the returned knives are all great deals, and everyone there is real friendly.the other places ive gone have sold some pretty good knives(bm,spydies...)but didnt know a lot about what they sell, they also had a lot of p.o.s. knives for the un-educated

so,if your ever in this area, stop by a.g. and have a look.(hmmm.maybe theyll pay me for saying all this

IBonTop, Mike Payne/Knives and Things is in the Memphis area. Give him a call, I would post his address for you, but I think he works from home and not from a store and so posting his address would be rude. His phone number for Knives and Things is 901-340-1973. This man is #1 for service and very fair pricing. He is, for me, the number one dealer. If he carries that knife, I always try to go to him first. I think you'll find him to be a very likeable dealer.

I was at the local indoor range on Sunday. After the girlfriend put some rounds through her Walther PPK (1 hour range time...$10) she wanted to look at their selection of Benchmades. She decided to buy a BM 940 with blue handles ($140).
A friend of mine was showing off his Mini Reflex (he is LEO) and one of the clerks mentioned that is the fastest opening knife available.
You should have seen the look on his face when I pulled out my Commander (priceless).

Well, my local "King of knives" have stopped carrying everything except victorinox and a very limited number of CS blades. I have nothing against that, it's their choice. It's also my choice whether or not i pay $240 for an SRK. Having said that, i never go in there anymore. They still have a buisness to run, and i don't want to waste their time when i have no intention of buying anything.

At the local Merlo's in Medford, most of the young employees I've spoken to I would like to think possibly came away from our conversations perhaps a bit more enlightened as to what they were selling.

The lady who works there now is an exception. She is an older woman into her 50's I'd guess, and IMO is pretty sharp about knives. I know that's not saying much considering the track record of mall cutlery shop workers, but I think she could join right in as a welcome forumite!

She never tries to sell me anything anymore, as she knows I always have a nice blade on me above and beyond what her employer has to offer in the shop....

Apparently she collects antique knives exclusively with MOP handles. I guess her passion started with a collection she inherited. I showed her my custom damascus Buck 110 with pearl one day, and she just kind of checked it out nonchalantly. Polite, but definitely not overly impressed. She must have some fine knives!

Anyway, a fresh change from what has all too often become the norm described by Gollnick.

My shop experiences relate to SHARP EDGE SHARP SHOOTER in Sandton, Johannesburg S.A., one of the 2 best shops in the country. The sales staff are mostly youngsters, but fairly well informed. A few months ago I specifically went in to buy a CRKT Urban Shark. I went there for it and it was inexpensive and I knew that. The young clerk gave me such uphill, criticizing CRKT until I wanted to walk out. So I told him something like "I didn't always own a Glock" meaning that I first started out on humbler equipment. Junior starts going on about the H&K USP, but soon after I find out he's still a student and doesn't own a gun. Junior carries a Spydie Military and is always eager to do this speed presentation routine of his. The last time I was in the shop I DESTROYED my credit card on a BM AFCK. Junior was much more pleasant that day - seems he did his routine and one of the older customers blasted him for such behaviour. I didn't comment on the event, but it made a better man out of Junior. He once showed me a CRKT S2, but he didn't know what model it was - I had to tell him.

Last time I was there (just looking) Junior and 2 other clerks were grilling a newbie clerk. They had him running all over the place. I didn't pick this up straight away as I was starring at some knives. I heard a question and answered without looking up. Oops, sorry for interrupting the test.

They were testing the hell out of this poor bugger so I spoke to him when they let off for a moment and told him where to get old copies of Blade really cheap and to get onto the internet. He seemed very thankful.
