I think my combination Crystalon stone cost 25 bucks, shipping included. If I had to pick just one stone for the rest of my days this would be it. The India comes a close second - makes the better edge but is slower on some steels. Or maybe the India would be my first choice and the Crystalon a close second... Pricing is about the same for either. They're also very good stones to learn on - good feedback for freehanding and both work well across a range of steels. I have to agree with some on the forum that don't like diamond plates for carbon steel, and you cannot do recurves on diamond plates. Rock bottom best stone for the money is the Home Depot econo stone - they go for 6.99 I think and do a good job on a range of steels.
