Anything wrong with softening a finished piece and then re-hardening it?
 
Yep, filework then HT. I have used the "soft back draw" to soften the spine enough to do filework. Takes kind of a deep blade. Put it in a pan with about 1/2" of water, then heat the back of the blade with a torch. Can go blue, that's OK if the edge stays cool in the H20.
 
Thanks for the info! Do I need to re-treat the blade after doing that, or will it be ok just to cool?
 
As long as the edge doesn't get colorful past straw colored, you should be ok to not heat treat the whole thing again. I'd tend to err toward deeper water just to be sure.
