I live in California. More specifically, Walnut 91789. So yeah, I've been reading up on laws, and I think I've got a grasp of it.

So basically, whatever length folders, as long as you keep them folded and concealed. Depending on location, a limit on length may be imposed, but the shortest is 3 inches for a folding knife. No butterfly's, no switchblades, assisted openers are okay. Fix blades can only be worn if you wear them unconcealed, and as long as they meet that, any length is cool (You could wear a sword if you wanted, but an officer would probably cite you for being a disturbance). You can carry knives at any age.

Is that about right? Anything incorrect? Anything left out?

Thanks.

since you live in la county, the la county code is also applicable.

ill find if for you.

13.62.010 Knives and daggers defined.

As used in this chapter, the terms “knives and daggers” shall include any knife having a blade of three inches or more in length; any spring-blade, switch-blade or snap-blade knife; any knife any blade of which is automatically released by a spring mechanism or other mechanical device; any ice pick or similar sharp stabbing tool; any straight-edge razor or any razor blade fitted to a handle. (Ord. 11915 § 1, 1979.)

13.62.020 Carrying knives and daggers in plain view prohibited.

It is unlawful for any person to carry on his person, in plain view, any knife or dagger. (Ord. 11915 § 2, 1979.)

13.62.030 Exemptions to chapter applicability.

The foregoing restrictions shall not be deemed to prohibit the carrying of ordinary tools or equipment for use in a lawful occupation or for the purpose of lawful recreation, or where the carrying of a knife or dagger is a recognized religious practice. (Ord. 11915 § 3, 1979.)

13.62.040 Violation--Penalty.

Any person violating this chapter is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not exceeding $500.00 or by imprisonment in the County Jail for a period not exceeding six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment. (Ord. 11915 § 4, 1979.)

Ah. So, let's say I'm down somewhere fishing or hiking or whatever, and I've got a fixed blade on me. That would be okay? So, it's okay to carry a fixed blade as long as you've got a good reason for it, whether concealed or not.

Also, if it is under 3 inches in length, has no spring, ect, it is not a knife, as defined by LA county codes? I can carry anything under 3 inches where I want to, and whenever I want to, as long as I'm not in violation of state laws?

Thanks. I appreciate it.

You got it down pretty well. Except that a fixed blade must alway be in plain view. Even when fishing up in Azusa's West Fork, A ranger will pop you if you have a fixed blade concealed.

Also if you are outside of LA County (living in Walnut you will be in and out of it all the time) folders do not need to be concealed.

But you have it down better than most cops and lawyers :D.

Is this LA County or LA city? Sounds like LA city. Is there a website you got these from?

Thank you, Mr. Clark.

Do you know where the L.A., Orange, Riverside, and San Bernadino county regs related to knives might be found on the Internet?

a google or yahoo search should lead you to each city's or county's site, and typically the code/ordinance sections are available there.

I use this one alot. It is a good base source of info.

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html

You will need to spend some time digging though the muni sections of the local and county gov websites.

So just google "Walnut City" and that should take you to the web and you have to start digging till you find the listing of city Ords. Then dig even deaper till you find the Ords relating to "weapons".

Not an easy process but it will get you what you want to know.

Well, I have to be off to bed. Driving into Fullerton for a meeting with the Detective, the DA and the PubDef on a 653k case. I guess they have all decided that everyone will act based on my findings. So if I say legal, the DA will drop the case and if I say illegal (it does happen about 20%) then the PubD will plea it out. Nothing like all that pressure to make me sleep well:rolleyes:

Best to all for a couple days.
Ron

I am asked all the time why I am qualified to be an expert in knives. Generally half way through my reasons the person glazes over, but here are my qualifications anyhow.LOL

17 yrs custom knife maker / designer

4.5 yrs federal law enforcement

7 articticles written on my work (including Blade (cover story), Popular Science, and Discover)

3 industry awards for technical innovation and design innovation

2 terms as president of California Knifemakers Assoc.

3 years owner of a knife manfacturing company

consultant / designer / sub-contractor for 22 knife companies

consultant / designer / maker of knives for 1 major motion picture, 1 documentory, 3 television series

Provided legal consultation / testimony in Ca, Wa, Or, Il and Canada

Provided legal consultation and testimony in Criminal, Civil, Patent and Import/Export cases

Reconized by the courts as a weapons expert with a specialty in Edged Tools and Edged Weapons

Reconized by the courts as an expert in CPC653k.

I have been involved in aprox 83 cases, during those cases the court has never ruled contrary to my findings (and by Gods grace alone have never been thrown in jail for contempt)

Once informed a Chief of Police (in court) that if he were truely so concearned that a restrained and proned out subject would be able to retrive, draw and then use a Kershaw Leek as a deadly weapon against his officers, then he needed to fire all of his officers and training staff and hire people who know what the hell they are doing. Because my 8yr old daughter could stop a restrained and proned out subject from being a threat with a knife that was in his front pocket. (Ok well, that may not be exactly a qualification, but it sure was fun to do)

Regularly retained as an expert in the Kershaw/Onion AO operating system and related laws by Kai International/Kershaw Knives

I am currently the lead maker and designer for Arizona Gun Leather
I am currently a paid consultant in edged tools, weapons and related laws
I am currently a Commercial Helicopter Pilot flying with Sherrifs Air Support Search and Rescue

Whew, so thats me in a nutshell (right where I belong)

Thanks
Ron

PS, I will be posting up my case findings and just general events around todays case in the morning. It turned out to be a very interesting case and day. Stay tuned , Same Knife Channel, Same Knife Time. Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na KNIFE MAN LOL, sorry just could not stop myself

As a follow-up to Ron's post, I actually got to see him do his "expert witness" thing at the Fullerton PD. Very interesting! He's a good guy and very knowledgeable!

Alien Resurrection
The True Story of Alexander the Great
Mail Call
Deadwood
NCIS

I am actually in about ten scenes in Alexander. Most of the scenes I have on a bronze helmet and face plate but you can see my face in two scenes. They roped me in as an extra when I dropped the swords off on the set. Alot of the stuff is now stock footage for the History Channel. If you are ever watching and see a figure with a full face shield charge the camera, that is me.

Thread revival....Sorry, but I kinda lost track of this thread and still have a few questions...

To RW: What were you involved in with NCIS? I watch that occasionally. The acting gets too cheesy for me at times, haha. Also, you live in Arizona? How come you haven't provided consultation in your home state? You were a federal officer?

Epic. I'm considering a career in law enforcement, but I don't want to work for the state/county. Will severe, severe myopia (Negative 8. I think that's like 20/400 or 20/800. Can be corrected to 20/20 though with corrective lens.) prevent me from being hired?

Back on topic. Is the knife clipped to your pocket considered non concealed? Is a low riding clip considered non concealed? Thanks.
