I once forgot I was carrying my Leatherman Squirt when I was going through security at the Louisville airport. They offered to let me take it back to my car, but I had been dropped off by a friend that particular time. The other options were to surrender it or to spend $10 for a service that lets you mail it back to yourself. I opted to spend the $10 and a TSA officer took my info, filled out the mailer and dropped it in the box. A couple of weeks later my knife showed up in the post office.
I'm glad to hear that elkins, that is the way it should be. I didn't know they offered such a service. I only fly a 4 or 5 times a year and always make sure my EDC is well hidden in my checked bag. Maybe its just me but as soon as I get into the security line at the airport I double check to make sure I don't have anything that's prohibited, I'd hate to miss my flight. Many of my knives have sentimental value to me and I'd be very "non-compliant" if they tried to confiscate a knife left to me by my grandfather for example. Lately I've been leaving those knives at home and taking a Victorinox Cadet when I travel since it is cheap and easily replaced.
