LOL Buying this knife saved me $900 over buying a custom Kingdom Armory BTB-F . They are remarkably similar in design and shape!!!
 
Ok I caved and bought one. I'm still not used to the unusual blade shape. It seems so specialized, but I'm not even sure what for.
 
I've only carried mine a few times so far. I can't say it's my favorite Spydie, but it certainly get's people's interest when I pull it out to open a box or something. Definately a different blade design, but then again so was the Captain, which is also a Breeden design.
 
what is the purpose of the nearly sharpened spine?

My understanding is that it's supposed to be leading the blade under seat belt/webbing. You slip the spine under the webbing, push the blade until webbing aligns in the cut-out and you slide it to a place where it is safe/convenient to cut. The 'hump' above it can be safely leading the blade along the body with cutting edge away from the body.
