I finally received my first opinel, a No.5, and it's fantastic! A lot smaller than I expected, but a really neat little thing. I was really dull when I got it but after a few strokes with a pocket sharpener it is push-cutting paper like nothing and carved through its first apple as if it was warm butter. No need to put pictures as you all know how it looks like, but I will anyway so I can post comparison pics later when it gets a patina. Not gonna force it on this one but let it develop on its volition.

Nice! Wait until you try out one of the larger models... a whole different animal! I recommend a No. 10.

Congradulatons on joining the cult of the Opinel. Be wary, these things are habit forming. How snug did the blade come? Sometimes I snug up the pivot so it's a little stiff like a real friction folder should be. Grease the joint area with some Vasoline and it will have more water resistance.

Cool! I've got my first Opinel (a No.8) inbound, and I can't wait. I actually ordered it because I'm putting together a B.O.B. for my wife, but I have a feeling I might just have to keep this first one for myself.

i have a number seven in carbon and a number eight hawkbill in stainless. excellent knives; they will still cut when they are dull but you can touch them up on the edge of a car window, bottom of a coffee cup or (i suppose) a smooth rock out of a creek and go right back to work.

It's absolutely perfect with just the right amount of resistance. Now I'm used to the Douk Douk so this opens up like nothing, but it feels right. As for the bigger ones, I would really like to try a No. 8 but I think the largest I can go and still use as an EDC legally over here is the No.6, so that might be my next.

Being in the U.K. isn't the locking number six a no-no? Of course, you can take off the locking ring and just have the friction folder form of it. The bigger ones are handy. I keep a large slim model in the kitchen drawer for de-boning chickens and butterflying fish.

yes Carl, that would be necessary, although it would annoy me immensely. Really wish locks were allowed here. oh well :)

Almost as annoying as them being banned in France.

I remember reading someplace that France has banned lock blade knives. I couldn't believe that though. How can yoou ban an icon of French cutlery?

Interesting choice, very cool. The viroblocs are nice, but not vital IMHO. I want the reproduction they make, of the original.

OK,all this talk of fish tails & Opis has pushed me over the fence.
My next knife purchase will be an Opinel dangit!

I kept a No. 7 Olive in my lunch box. I switched blades with a carbon No. 7 so I could have a carbon blade with an Olive handle, which is not a factory option. Great knife. Stolen. I miss it. It had a lovely purple patina from slicing steak and chicken at lunches at work. Olive wood is beautiful, and always seems to feel warm no matter the ambient temperature.

Wait a minute. You don't have an Opinel yet? Are you aware of the rule that all knife nuts have to have at least one Opiinel? Don't tell me we're gonna have to send someone over there!

:D
