So tell me what you think about some Becker DIY sheath kits

So the last 9 months or so I've been kicking around the idea of offering some of my less complicated to build Becker sheaths as diy kits. I say less complicated not because people are dumb but because some of them require special tools, measurements and alot of critical thinking.

Since I have a couple die cutting machines I can punch out whichever patterns I want to offer, throw in the thread, snaps and hardware and then leave it up to the builder to obtain their chosen dye and/or finish coat, sewing awl and needles and whatever other fancy schmancy stuff they want to do.

I know most people do not know one type of leather from the next and do not want to buy an entire shoulder or side to do one project. Also along those lines, I use the best Hermann Oak tooling leathers, they are not available to the general public unless you order in large, and I mean makes your butt hurt when you sign the check large, quantities so you would be getting the best stuff there is and not stuck using the tandy stuff.

The problem I think would be tech support for every question under the sun related to leather working, I simply couldn't do that due to the time involved.

Whatcha think hmmm?

Complete with mandatory random Becker content :)

I think that's a great idea. As you said, the people asking for help would probably drive you crazy unless you deal with that up front. Maybe put together some instructions that come with it that explain you wont have time to help beyond the included instructions. At least that way you only have to explain it once. I have wanted to ask you questions so many times but have never got the nerve up to bother you. Hell I would pay for just some tips from you. Maybe you should write a book. :D

I'd buy one. Make a YouTube video or something putting one together, that should take care of most of the questions.

Shoot! When Sky was making my Hawk sheath I know I drove him crazy! To the point where he almost sent me a pink one just to get a rise out of me :D

I'd definitely be interested..... if for no other reason, it would be a great way to learn some basics of sheathmaking.

I think it would go over well. Lots of DIY type folks here.

Sounds good :)
Awl, needles... check! (Made some dogleashes a couple of years ago, and had fun with that).
Maybe a ready-to-go kit to sew a sheat for my BK17 might be a nice project :)

I'd probably buy one. Not sure what needles and an awl costs, but may be worth having an option of putting together a full kit. I know I have been looking locally for some hyde glue and can't find it. Don't even know where I'd find leather dye and all that. Maybe by buying in bulk and then putting it into little bottles, you would not have to sink too much cost into stocks.

Also, I like the you tube video thing, but a really good thread here with lots of pictures would also likely help.

Sounds interesting. I was just at TLF looking at some stuff and I can say, I was overwhelmed and gave up, not making a purchase.

Of course, I'm in that crowd......you said it yourself....

...people are dumb [but] because some of them require special tools, measurements and alot of critical thinking.
ok, so a slight edit here, LOL

:D

Oh yeah, I'd be in... all the parts and hardware in a kit with die cut parts, I'd probably even buy kits for knives/hatchets/hawks/axes I don't even own. Great idea, honestly, I'd love to make some gear, the main thing stopping me is sourcing all the hardware and procuring decent leather.

Maybe add a little FAQ sheet with it to save you the time of answering a bunch of the same questions. I would definitely grab one!
