Yea khukuris are sharp and if you are doing yard work and a bear rushes you accidents can happen. I just wish I could have gotten the bear head or at least a picture of the first bear I have killed with a knife but by the time I got back from the ER some game wardens had already removed the carcass. :grumpy:

Before it gets asked it took 15 stitches.

they shoulda let you keep the bear-- if that is not earning it I don't know what is.

Rules on killing wildlife for survival here in Alaska are VERY strict and rightly so, otherwise there would be poachers everywhere and all they would have to do is say "I thought it was going to kill me".

Yikes! Glad you made it out okay (stitches aside, with any luck it'll heal up quick!)

Sharp Khukuri's are important...

Now I'm going to ask the questions that I'm sure will be on everyone's mind.
Which kind of khukuri was it?
Shame they didn't let you keep the bear.
What kind?

fair enough halfsquelch-- anything to protect the resources from unsavory people. I love the USA

You should at least get a tooth or a claw or something to wear around your neck.

I need more story. So in the process of brush clearing your attacked by a bare. You kill said bare with unknown model kukri?

And the extent of your injuries is you cut yourself with said kukri?

I'd say your one lucky puppy there halfsquelch. Very lucky indeed. I'm aching for more info. Stab it, slash it, ???

Black bear, Grizz?

I think it's easy enough for the powers that be to determine self defense most of the time and they should give ya something. Picture minimum, a claw, something. That's a hell of a thing to go through and you deserve something more than 15 stitches which incidentally did cause me to throw up a little bit in my mouth, blood ya know, does that to me. Actually lots of things do that to me.

Heal up quick my friend and don't leave the house without that knife. It's a proven entity now.

That looks awful. Hope you're alright.
More details on the bear, please. Size? Did he bluff charge? How many times did you have to hit him? Where did you hit him?

yeah halfsquelch, please post a picture of the bear slayer-- as it has acquired a powerful soul. see if the bear wants to stay in the blade, just ask.

What Bawanna said! Tell us a story Half. It dont have to be ALL true:D Glad it was a bear carcus and not yours! Whats all them little white globular things next to your bones:eek:J/K
Hope all heals fine for ya man!

Them's cell's ndog, I thought you had one of them MS or PH's or some college edgumication.

When I say I can feel stuff, that's what I feel em in. Not in halfsquelches cells but my own ya know.

It's always self-defense against a bear, unless you're very good at reasoning with them. However, the law has to be strict because it's too easy for an amateur poacher to provoke a self-defense situation. Just get in the bear's face. Or leave a big chunk of meat lying around. Or kick one of its cubs. I wouldn't recommend that last one.

You could say, "The bear was going for my khukuri," but they've heard that one before. Of course it's extremely unlikely that anyone would provoke a bear attack just for an excuse to use his khukuri, so I'm just speaking hypothetically here. :D

Ahhhh! Now ill have that pic in my head everytime you feel it in your cells! Half is kinda marbled like that Kobe beef stuff aint he? Must get regular massages;)

I agree. It would seem almost a given that it was self defense since he used a khuk. Be damn foolish to provoke one with only a knife.

I had a hunting partner (stepbrother in law, my dad insisted) wanted to mess with a black bear cub when we was in the woods many years ago. I told him it was a fine idea but give me about a 20 minute head start so I could get to my truck before the games began.
For once in his life he saw the logic I later explained to him and he lived to be a fool another day. I got a ton of stories about that guy. Nice guy but didn't belong no place without walk and don't walk signs.

Wow! killed a bear with a kukri, now that's a real man. We are all glad you are the one that made it out alive. Just remember, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. You will have an amazing story to tell the rest of your life. I would definitely mount that kukri behind glass and hopefully and can get some piece of that bear for the display as well. The pelt, some teeth, even some friggin hair lol....

Dude you are my hero!

Well that beats my "scaring away a pitbull with a tree branch" story. They shoulda definitely given you a tooth or something.

@phillll No it was not a stuffed animal

@Rose&Thorn It was a 21" M43 http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Home-from-vacation-to-a-pleasant-surprise!!!?

@phillll again... LMAO

@Bawanna & Chignecto Woodsman & Gehazi & ndoghouse It was a Brown bear somewhere in the range of 300-350lb. Dropped it in two blows, first one took out its throat and half its neck second one stabbed through its spinal column and came out his bottom side between his neck and where his two front legs meet. I did not provoke it I was just clearing brush off the back end of one of my co-workers houses to get some firewood when it charged me. The cut itself was from the initial charge because I slipped on the wet ground and landed on my khuk. I was pretty lucky though because it did not hit the main radial nerve or any tendons only two minor branches of the nerve. It did however slice up a bit of muscle and went clean to the bone.

@davidf99 Normally I carry a gun with me but didn't see the need because I was outside in the yard doing work. Not that it would have made a difference because the bear would have gotten to me before I could have drawn it.

@ndoghouse Yea those are the fat cells that are between your skin and muscles/tendons to protect them from minor impacts. And no I have never had a massage, pretty much everyone will look similar to that if you cut them open.

Dude, I bow to your resourcefulness and will to survive. I think most would fill their britches and die under the bear in that situation. It sounds like the khukri was a better resource than a pistol in this case and it worked effectively as designed.

M43 would obviously be a good choice for such a scenario provided that like you one had the attitude to put it to proper use.

Nothing but respect for you man, hope you heal up soon. And while it sounds kind of girlyman a massage can sometimes work wonders. Beats a chiropractor hands down sometimes. And I think you deserve one right about now, tell em to watch the arm though.

Thank God you're alive, and with just that one cut. I'm sure a bear mauling would have been horrifying to say the least and possibly fatal.
