  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

So (too) many knives?

What number is not enough, enough, or too much is different for each individual, and that's OK. I have less than ten each of Spyderco and Benchmades, 40+ ZTs, and about 160 Kershaws. Lately, I have been selling off some to fund new purchases, as my interests have evolved a bit over the years.

Because you're looking for a practical reason where none exists. Knives are cool. It's ok to spend money on things you think are cool (as long as you can take care of your family, of course). There's no reason beyond the intersection of practicality and art in your pocket. I love the way (some) knives look and feel, and how useful they are in day to day life. How useful is a painting? Music? Television and movies? Books? As tools, we're tempted to view them in a practical light, and I think they do need to bring some practicality to the table, but we should also recognize that we've passed the point of practicality a while ago, and that's ok.

Short answer is we've all been brainwashed into consumerism. The only difference is the particular objects people pursue.

I think most knife fans will run into that conundrum eventually. My suggestion is periodically downsize and put that money to something nice.
Earlier this year I dumped most of my Benchmade and ESEE knives since I no longer use them (or ever used them). I have a couple collector/showpieces/sentimental knives I don't plan on getting rid of in the foreseeable future, but the rest I still use and carry. Used that money to buy a knife I've been eyeing for a long time and put the rest away.

Occasionally, I'll give somebody one from my collection. Though I'm stingey on who I give them to because thouse that don't have an appreciation for knives will use them like a redheaded stepchild. I restored/rehung a old ax for my father, only for him to chop roots out with it the next day and kept it dull gathering rust.

I've been thinking about this a LOT recently as well! I've gone a bit crazy and splurged on a lot of knives in a short period of time that made me question my hobby, as I don't even depend on a knife to get me through the day. Still have no answer, other than I like 'em!
