I love the comp finish on the INFI... yes... it is true that the decarb gets darn right fugly. But the fine convex edge on this bad boy just keeps on cuttin'.

She isn't the prettiest girl on the block, but she takes care of me. ;)

FYI... Independence Pale Ale... damn fine beer brewed in Austin, TX. Hoppy ale... not quite an IPA... but I highly recommend it!:thumbup::thumbup:

She looks loved:thumbup:

I let mine go because I do not mind a patina, like on an old Chef knife
but I soon noticed pitting on the decarb in just a few weeks.....

PITTING!
Doh!!!

Well that finalizes it... Tomorrow morning comp finish gets to meet Mr. 3M sanding disk*! IT IS ON!!!

It should be a hell of a fight... I'm thinking Ali vs. Frasier type bout. Still, I'll do some work on her and post pics of the new 'purtyfied' squatch tomorrow**....

*all references to anything implying work on Sunday must be taken with a minimum of ten grains of salt. Any and all Sunday work is based on the inevitable and perhaps catastrophic hangover which will undoubtedly be suffered by author of this BS. Thanks for reading.

** I'm beggining to doubt whether I'll make it out of bed tomorrow... It has taken me almost an hour to spell check this thread. :o

She looks like she earns her keep.

And thanks for the beer recommend...I'm a hophead who spends a decent amount of time in Austin, I will keep an eye out for the Independence.

i think it is kind of beautiful with that kind of extreme patina! can't wait untill my nmsfno gets it!

Were you storing it at the bottom of the Dead Sea or does raw infi really rust badly?

The 'extreme patina' (love that term BTW) is called decarb. Notice that the edge is pure.

The decarb is, as I understand it, a fine layer of something (possibly radioactive) that helps the coating stick to the blade. The comp finished blades have no coating, thus the rust on the exterior.

INFI is extremely rust resistant, and for the record, I no longer store my blades at the bottom of the Dead Sea. I am, however, looking into storage at the bottom of the Red Sea.:D

Nice blade. Loks like you really like to use that one.

Now if you only had a good revolver (If it ain't a Smith, it must be @#$T), or better yet a GREAT pistol (Glock Rocks the World), you'd be set;)

LOL! Yeah... Glocks are ok... :p I only have 4 of em. ;) The SP101 is my first double action Ruger revolver. It is not as smooth and clean as my 686 or 442. The Smith's are clearly more refined in fit and finish. The SP101 required a little dremel buffing to clean up some of the internals, and a reduced main spring (wolff 11lb) to smooth out the DA trigger pull. Now it's like butta!:D

It is kinda a tweener, bigger than the J frame but smaller than the L frame 686. The 5 shot cylinder makes it carry nicely. I whipped up a kydex/leather IWB holster for it in the fashion of a Sparks V-max. It works great... very comfortable and thin.

I'm still waiting on my hangover to go away so i can start working on the rusty 'squatch... my head hurts. :(

Decarb is what happens to the surface of the steel when exposed to oxygen at very high temperatures during the heat treating. Essentially the carbon and some other stuff is "burned off" of the surface, or converted into some kind of metal oxide. This makes decarb not technically infi(for that matter 440c, 1095, whatever the original alloy was ), and if ground off infi has better stainless properties than ats-34. While it's controlled to some extent with the right atmosphere and various treatments unless you're doing blades one at a time or or have money to waste it's difficult to eliminate. I'm estimating the thickness on most non-satin/doublecut busses is less than .005 inches. It does unfortunately rust extremely easily, easier than unprotected carbon steel actually. It also happens that the porous decarbed rough surface does stick to coatings fairly well, and won't hurt anything if the blade is coated, so it's a big portion of why a combat grade knife costs less than a similar double cut or satin blade :)

OK guys... I have taken a brief respite from my Sunday sloth to show you the new 'purtfied' Sarsquatch... It was a brutal 15 minutes using the drill, 3m sanding disk, and a handful of advil. I think I may have even broke a mild sweat... which interestingly reeked of beer.

Here she is fellas... with Glock porn for Chuck (are you happy now!) :p. :D

You made this, KD?

Hell of a holster there, bruh. I would be interested in something like that for my 442. Very nice work.
Been thinking about a Law holster for appendix carry. How does this thing work in appendix carry?
