Just idly curious... I see a lot of gigantic Beckers with more coming, and in looking at my outdoor activities I'd have no use for even a BK9. Obviously y'all are chopping stuff left and right... I'm wondering what. Is it just backyard stuff in areas where things grow faster than here (AZ)? Or is it because you're going through a lot of thick brush in your hunting/exploring time? Or... what?

I take a hatchet camping, i imagine those with something like the BK9 take it instead of the hatchet and use it the same way. chopping firewood, cutting down small trees if the want to build ashelter etc.

Zombies!

Part of it is determining your kit - some folks like a big knife, some like a machete, some an axe, some a hatchet, some a saw...

For me, a good mid sized fixed blade and a saw is about right for firewood / shelter duties. Some just like a big chopper.

Well, I like big knives. Always have. Not sure why. What do I chop with it? I live in East Tennessee, we recently became classified as a Temperate Rainforest. Everything here is green, and in the Spring, its a jungle. I use mine like a machete, lopping off low hanging branches, cutting underbrush, splitting wood for my outdoor fire pit. Yeah, there are axes around here, but like I said, I like knives.

There's lots more stuff you can do with a big knife in the woods, than a small knive. I can make a big knife do small work, but I can only make a small knife do so much. If I did not know anything about a situation, and I had to bring only one knife, it would be a big one. Or a BK2. Tough call. :D

big blades are for clearing brush, dismembering juniper trees (pasture weeds), removing tree limbs that try to swat me when brush hogging on the tractor, etc...
and yes, there's a lot more fast growing woody green stuff in my neck of the woods than yours. (I used to go camping outside Goodyear every February and don't remember much other than rocks, sand, sage, and tumbleweeds)

Since I bought a good folding saw I don't have much use for large knives outside of spliting wood for my fire place.

Well, I just bought an Ontario RTAK 2 and am asking myself the same question.......
But it sure looks cool.
On a more serious note, no matter what or how many knives I carry, I ALWAYS carry an axe.

Thats like asking a person "why do you need so many shoes/purses/clothes/tools/guns/fishing poles/fishing reels/tackle/tractors/cars/trucks," ect, ect... Do any of us NEED ALL of the things we have ??? I like knives of all kinds. Large knives work better for HD jobs. I like the ones that are so HD you can use them for more than just a kinfe. They are still legal to own where i live, so i am "having at it" !!! LOL :) I use mine for clearing trails, brush, trimming trees & hopefully one day soon, some real bushcrafting.

Big knives are big fun. Of course small knives are big fun too...so I guess I just like knives.

Cool, thanks for the answers. Makes sense.

And Twinstick, I wasn't questioning why people had then but rather was asking what they're used for. I figured there was a reason.

Pieces of oak to try and win prizes. Turns out I suck at it, so I will be chopping other things to get better at chopping, so that next time I can win a big knife that I can use for chopping. Kinda some circular logic there, but it works.

Chopping is fun, as is batoning. And big knives do it better than smaller knives.

Knives are fun, Big knives are big fun. I can't really justify 98% of the things I own, but I know I like them and thats why I buy them.

I like a large (thin bladed) knife for clearing sight lines while hunting. Also a big knife can make a small tree into a rifle stand quite quickly.

I mainly use long Beckers to win long ESEEs. :p :D
