So, What Can You Tell Me About the Spec Bump?

I found and purchased a NIB 1596 today at a local shop. It is not serial numbered but has the "First Production Run" logo on the blade. CPM 154 and Aug 06 marked. Was there more than one variant of the Spec Bump? Any idea how many were produced?

Thanks in Advance

And if i remember there are like 3 spec bumps....1st run...dlc blade and Stonewashed blade

Hmmm... spec bum that would be a really nice symetrical bum on a beautiful woman! Hahaha I couldn't resist! I believe those spec bumps were 1 of 500. After that I can't recall. I know if you look around you will still see them here and there. Depending on price, I would pick it up because most likely it is old stock and has an old stock price!

Exactly what I was thinking Chet on the stone wash and dlc.

These are also the big brothers of the speed bump, as in better steel. And it was a Ken Onion design.

That's it exactly. I've seen a couple old adds showing s30 blade material so am assuming there were at least two variants.

Bad Juju: Saw my typo but couldn't edit it... oops;) and I got it for 25% off the original MSRP

Those are nice knives. I think like they said, 3 variations of the spec. Yours, a stonewasher in S30V, and a black dlc with the newer scales and studs in CPM-154.

I think there are a total of 12

Like Chester was saying:
Speedbump in sandvik with grey and black handle
Speedbump with g10 scales with sandvik steel
Black aluminum bump
Ive seen two variations of the snap-on bump, one red and one orange.
3 Ti variations
4 spec-bump variations. 1 of 500, 1596SW, dlc with S30V and one CPM-154.

And it is, or was Ken Onions personal favorite knife.

thats also the first run scales and stud locks, they changed them all after that. I think there is a non "1 of 500" with all those parts. So make that 13 variations, but the sku will be the same as others. Depends on how you look at it. Maybe only 3 models, but 5 variants.

Good find btw:D

you can edit under advanced editing....Bum!

Thanks and done! You learn something new everyday. I also picked up a green bump at the same place a few weeks ago. I'm planning on getting the blue one as soon as I can scrape up the cash.

I think you are right on cpm 154 and s30v both on the specs. maybe cpm on the first production and s30v after the initial first run.
Also to add there are a few colors on the snap-on bumps blue, red and orange come to mind can't recall the others.

Glad you got a good deal! Nothing better than finding old stock thats been waiting years for YOU to come pick it up!

No damascus :( They HAD the green and blue Ti bumps, a Ti Tyrade, Ti Volt, and a Ti Offset with the splatter paint job. My Kershaw collection has improved dramatically but my bank account is feeling the pain. Now if I can only get my hands on a Tilt and original Speedform.....

Thats some store!

I at one time had the prototype of that knife with PROTOTYPE on the blade. Old style ridged scales and CPM-154 DLC. It was the same configuration as the first run version. It wasn't the polished micarta ZDP version unfortunately because I would have been very tempted to keep that one! I returned mine to its rightful home on Teton Avenue and received some prototype Blur stuff in return. I probably seemed a bit pushy but didn't want to just give up something as rare as a marked prototype but received far more than I could have even imagined in return. The prototype Blur handles I posted pictures of previously came out of that trade.

These are really neat with the stud lock. I've still got the Sandvik black G10 version, a Ti Bump, and 2 versions of the bigger brother the Offset which also share the starburst pattern handles of the later runs of the Spec Bump.

As far as released versions, Bob nailed it with the 11 as far as I know. For collectors, I know there are a number of prototypes that never made it out as production versions like that ZDP version and a pink/purple Ti bump and as far as I know they have never been seen in the wild only in pictures that Thomas posted many years ago. So probably no need to try and hunt those down like those elusive purple Blurs that are out there somewhere.

Thanks for all the information guys. Now I just need to decide if I should just throw it in the safe or use it. I'm a big believer that knives are made to cut things and it fits my hand as well or better than anything else I own. I'm also curious how well the recurve works. But, if I use it that means I'll need to put a really good edge on it and it won't be much of a collectors item after that. Maybe I should just get a Speedbump.

Id just get a speedbump, I love using my knives, but the value of it as a nib specimen out ways cutting stuff. The G10 speedbumps are great knives, I have a few and have carried one as a secondary edc for a few years.

Thanks for the story, I really really really want to see that Ti Speedbump.
