So, what DO you use your knives for?

People often say that a knife is a tool rather than a weapon, and I'm cool with that.
However, they then on to say that you cannot do these things with your knife:

-Cut food (use crappy restaurant knife)
-Open boxes (use dull box cutter instead)
-Cut wires (use wire cutters)
-Cut off loose threads
-Remove staples (use the staple remover which often isn't there)
-Sharpen a pencil (use the pencil sharpener that isn't there)
-Cut paper (find those scissors!)

Or cut rope, a seatbelt, wood, trim fingernails...you get the picture.

So, I guess I should throw away all my knives and carry this with me everywhere:
-Staple remover
-Saw
-Scissors
-Pencil sharpener
-Nail clippers
-Wire cutters
-Rescue hook

Or, I could just use the damn knife I have in my pocket.

Love it. I was thinking the exact same thing over the past several days perusing the Exchange forum and seeing words like, "lightly carried" and the like. Or "only used to cut a few boxes and tape", or "only cut paper."

I use my EDC to go straight into the dirt and slice runners of grass going into my mulch beds. Okay not really but if it weren't for dirt getting in the mechanism I would. I'm thinking of getting a Survive! Knife GSO 4.1 fixed blade so I don't have to think twice about dirt and my kmife. I'm not sure what knife I'm going to EDC as right now I have a keychain with a Leatherman CS on it. I have about 5 knives I carry and don't worry about marking up...2 Benchmades, 2 Spydercos and a Mcusta Damascus blade. ....but I do worry about dirt.

Add prybar to your list too. ;)

Cheer up and go find something outside to needlessly cut.

Who cares how others do it? Do whatever you think is proper.

Maybe tomorrow...tonight will be gym night, and I don't think they'd appreciate me cutting any of their stuff. ;)

Or what if..."hey stabman, I have this knot in my gym shoes that's too tight, you wouldn't have a knife on you eh?"
Cheers

Well, I suppose that would be different.
Or if someone got caught in the escalator, I could be the hero of the day.

But somehow those situations don't seem to arise when I'm around...it must be beacuse my "Aura of Awesomeness" keeps all disaster at bay.
Yeah, that's it. :D

this is what i have to deal with all the time. Just recently i had to help a buddy put in a fence post. there were tree roots from a stump not too far from the hole, so i whip out my fixed blade & start hacking the crap out of the roots & got half of them cleared out & my friend screams " WHOA WHOA WHOA! DONT USE THAT! here take my shovel it will work better."

Logic: use a light weight, dull shovel to cut heavy dense roots or use a sharp heavy knife to get the job done..... got to love people

Rope cutting for reps?
Cardio apple peeling?

haha nice. get 2 pocket knives drive them into the ground & do push ups off them, the pull them out & use them as spikes to climb wood poles haha

your list also is missing Hammer/pummel, tooth pick, needle, & shaving razor

I have used pocket knives to get the patches of facial hair I missed when too hurried heading off in the morning. :)
I think my mouth would tend to bleed a tad if I used my knife as a toothpick though.

Let's see. I carry a SAK every day.

At work:
open boxes
cut banding
cut cardboard
cut packaging foam

In general:
trim a hangnail
trim a cuticle
poke a more prominant breather hole for my coffee

Plus a bunch of random stuff I don't even keep track of.

Camping is a whole other list

I read this post and it made me stop and think about how I use my EDC.
Like many Americans my plan A career plan did not work out. At the age of 56, I work 2 jobs to make ends meet. From 7:30 to 12:30 I work for a local school district as a delivery driver . 25 hours a week and not a minute more (thank you Obama care). Anyway I use my 10yo small Classic Sebenza to open cardboard boxes, cut plastic banding straps. In the afternoon I do yard work. I cut open bags of much, fertilizer, bals of hay. Needless to say I give my Sebenza a good workout every day. As far as retirement goes I anticipate using my Sebenza to open mail that says Obama care will not pay for my last doctors visit. Thank you Obama you Communist Community Organizer.
Yes it hard to separate how I use my knife from politics. I wish it were not so. Thank you BHO.

In my home, my display knives are part of my whole house air fitration system, dutifully collecting dust and cat hair. In my pocket, they dutifully collect lint and cat hair.

I hadn't considered the air filtration angle! :D
