So, what DO you use your knives for?

doesn't anyone else occasionally use their knives for cleaning fish or gutting deer, or am I the only one?

and lets not forget fondling and flicking....Probably what their used for more than anything else.

The fish I buy is usually already clean. And fried. ;)

I've used my knives for everything on that list except removing staples, and that's probably because my job and everyday life does not include them :D
I've also used my knives to make stakes for objects that need to be pinned to the ground or stuck together.

The tacticool knives many people carry and show off here are not terribly useful tools for most tasks.

You want to use a Sebenza to cut threads?

Thanks for the first laugh of the day...someone described a Sebenza as tacticool. :D

Let's see... Yesterday, a go to town workday, I used my knives (I EDC 4) to:
open packages
break down boxes
open my mail
cleaned my fingernails
open a fertilizer sack
peel an apple
cut a piece of twine

Today, a work on the farm day, I:
cut the seed heads off Johnson grass that was too tough to pull out
chopped down a 4 inch tree with that "large, heavy knife" known as an ax :)
grubbed out some mesquite stumps using a mattock and then used a MK2 to cut the smaller roots
cut the seal disks out of some bottles of motor oil
cut heavy twine for bundling up brush
cut open a bag of frozen chicken
peeled an apple
cut zuchini and summer squash and green beans in the garden
removed the rattles from a rattlesnake - no I am not THAT hardcore :D - I shot it with a 357 loaded with rat-shot first.

For those of you with small SAKs check out the Leatherman CS. Primarily a scissors: small blade, file, and tweezers. I love built in carabiner. Goes on and off keychain super fast and double duty as bottle opener. I also own SAKs. The Leatherman model 831219 is smaller, no carabiner but competes with small SAKs. I have found I'm using this way more than I ever thought I would. In the kitchen I routinely reach for it to open stuff. As for threads...nothing beats a scissors.

My bag has a Leatherman Wave in it..blade is only 154cm I believe. I usually carry a knife like a mini Griptilian and just got a Para 2 I may try carrying....a little big perhaps for me.

As for use....wish I was in the woods more. With a baby I'm in the kitchen more than the woods for now.

I use mine for most anything, including things that I go looking for just to use my knife. Food: yes. Boxes: for sure loose threads and whatever else might arise: absolutely! I bought the knife to use, not just sit there and weigh down my pocket

So, what DO you use your knives for?

Well, I don't use them for food. And I don't use them for self defense.

However, I am a homeowner. And I am married.

Under those conditions of existence I have an endless list of fixits and honeydo's. I use my pocketknife frequently. Exactly what I use it for pretty much depends on what I am doing that day.

  • cut garden hose so as to make repairs.
  • trim flashing from plastic pieces-parts
  • open blister packed widgets
  • cut cardboard
  • cut the tips off of tubes of caulk
  • Open boxes.

If you find you can't find a use for your knife, do this:
--Get married.
--Buy a house.

I use my EDC(small sebbie) for whittling, gardening, pretty much everything I need a knife for. I've had people tell me it's inappropriate to use a sebenza for "bushcrafty/outdoors" tasks. That's lame, they didn't pay for it or have an attachment of some sort to my knife, why do they care?

I have used my Emerson for cutting zip ties, cutting dope for testing after a drug arrest, and putting down an injured deer. Only animal I ever killed like that. It was sort of sad but necessary. Hopefully I don't have to do that any more. Knives are very up close and personal.

Lets see:
Cutting string
Cutting hay twine
Opening seed bags
Eating/food prep
Shaving
Cutting off tags
Cutting those annoying strings between flip flops
Chopping a down tree
Whittling
Opening blister packing
Cutting random paper
Clearing hanging branches
Making cups out of water bottles
Putting out mice(no more food prep for that knife)
Batoning
And I am probably leaving out some other tasks at that
