So what is everyones roots in the Philippines

Hey, Rafael--you're related to Flash Elorde?
Damn, that's cool.

Dont know too many Filipinos who have been in the US a while that still carry anything. OF course alot of them used to. What always freaked me out was my dads drunken friend that had the nasty habit of waving a loaded .38 around. Then again most of the filipinos i know are now very old. Makes me wonder why their kids never got into Filipino culture. It seems Im the only one outa all the kids in that group that cares.

Hello everyone. My mother was born in Pangasinan, my father, La Union. They were married in the Philippines then moved to the United States. As for my brothers and I we were born here.

Federico--hey, how are ya? Incidentally, notice that I said "Culturally Aware"...yeah, a whole lot of Fil-Ams have a deep kind of amnesia/will-to-denial about any aspect of their heritage...but that's another long-ass discussion that might better be served by a seperate thread--but among the Pinoys/Fil-Ams that ARE among the seekers and standard-bearers of our culture (of which my personal clique of friends consists of to no small degree) you are gonna find stick and blade people, male and female, that I can guarantee...If ye seek, so shall ye find...heck, you found US, right?

One of my ex-girlfriends was an arnis player, other Fil-Am chicks I know pack balisongs among their other "fashion accessories"--but, again, it's a particular
segment of the larger Pinoy-American community as a whole.

Be well, dude. Later...

(incidentally, not that this means anything, but Lucy Liu, of "Ally MacBeal" and "Charlie's Angels" apparently does Kali and Silat! I think I saw this in the lataest issue of Details--with Robert Downey, Jr. on the cover--she's interviewed inside...funny, huh? I personally think that ROCKS!

I was born at the Subic Bay Naval Base (my Dad was a U.S. Marine). My parents came to the U.S. that same year, and I've lived here ever since.

Bayani,

My uncle was a second in Flashs' corners in his earlier fights and he is the godfather to Flashs' son. I only met him once when I was a small kid but he took me around and showed me his trophy room, which were full of medals. His home was styled in a Japanese flavor. My uncle said that Flashs' father was an escrimador who specialised in long and short stick... really good footwork he said- which may have passed for the Elorde style.

Wish I had seen him fight in person.

--Rafael--

You aren't the only one, man...the Manongs, both in the PI and here in the States, are dwindling more and more, year after year--that's why the responsibility to concurrently evolve and preserve the FMAs is upon our generation--it's intense, this responsibility, but kinda cool too... Oh, hell--you know what I mean!

Peace!

I think alot has to do with the prejudice that was practiced long ago towards the older Filipinos. My parents did not teach us Tagalog in fear of us developing a "pilipino" accent. They wanted us to assimulate into white america. It is too bad they didn't teach us the language, because language is one of the foundations of culture.

Hye Vince, my girlfriends great-grandfather was a Datu in Mindanao as well. He moved to Kauai because on a trip north, he fell in love with a Catholic woman, which was unacceptable.
