Hmmm....self-defense folder???? Gunting???? Though I suppose you could argue it's more of a speciallized tool. Yojimbo is on the horizon, Ronin and Spot are already here. I haven't handled Extrema Ratio's models, so I can't compare solidness. But I'd bet the Ronin has a MUCH stronger lock
I think Spyderco is in a good position. Lots of good urban carry options - knives that are tactical-tough, but not quite so threatening. There's lots of POS knives out there that are the opposite - more menace than function. And lots of descent knives I wouldn't take to the office (including a few Spydercos).
As far as blade styles and locks, I think Spyderco has a range that's at least as broad as any other company out there. For any given application/environment, there's half a dozen knives that would be descent choices (see my lengthy recent posts to the guy in New York looking for a nonthreatening office knife. And there were several I left off because he didn't like the finger-choil handles). Although, if you're looking for a >4" blade, or cost greater than $130, you're pretty much out of luck.
I think the most common complaint here is that "X is my favorite, but it would be so much better in G-10 and SuperSteel". Yeah, maybe it would. But if Sal listened to everything we said, Spyderco would have 10,000 models that weren't selling because they were priced way out of the non-knut knife budget. I think Spyderco is doing a great job with limited runs to supplement the already sizeable lineup. ( though I think limiting sales to SFO, at higher prices than many dealers offer for similar models, is a bad choice. Why would I want to pay $20 extra for a Native III just because the handles happen to be blue? Except that I did pay extra for a blue native. Regardless, Benchmade seems to be having better movement with slightly smaller runs sold through dealers. I'll shut up and let Sal run the business now.

Yeah, there are some things Spyderco doesn't do, like large fixed blades and fancier knives along the lines of some of Benchmade's limited runs. But they seem to have a powerful innovation engine. If it goes any faster, I'll have to take out a mortgage.
