So what is the consensus on the new Bowie/Trident series?

Now that all three models have been out for awhile, what is the consensus on the most popular model being purchased and used?

I can't decide if I want Micarta, Kraton, or leather. For the price I could buy all three :)

Just curious because I am having a hard time making up my mind.

Me, I would go with the Micarta. The Kraton has a nice grippy feel to it but I don't think its as durable as the Micarta. If you go with the leather then you'll have to settle for a thinner blade from what I now understand. I guess it also depends on what your going to use it for. If your going to be near water or under it then the leather is not suppose to be a good choice and Micarta will probably be more slippery than Kraton but I guess that's what the thong is for. If your going to be around sand a lot then I think the Micarta would hold up the better of the three. As far as extreme heat goes I think the leather would be the one I would want to grip first. And extreme cold probably the Kraton because the other two would be slipperier. Then there's Zytel but I don't think any of theses new Bowie/Trident series comes in Zytel so you would have to switch to a different stile of knife like a Seal Pup elite. That's about all I know anybody else?

Whew.....

I was gonna simply say "Kraton" and leave it at that, but Bubba's all over it. Being a SoCal flatlander I never gave much if any thought at all to the different environments.
The Kraton I like/prefer is the old squishy type used on the SOG Tech I and Tech II.

I reckon the only "real" solution is to hang 3 SOG's on your belt: one with each type of handle material, thus ensuring preparedness for (most) every situation.

Cheers,

Carl

I agree!
Back in the 80's I had a Cold Steel Tanto with the Kraton handle and it held up well over the years. The fact of the matter is, even a leather handled Bowie would probably out-survive me. I have WW11 kabars that are still in great condition. Sometimes it seems the thought process is to build a cutting instrument that will last at least a thousand years w/o resharpening :)

In the end it is the knife that provides the most warm and fuzzys than the model that can slice through an anvil without dulling or corroding. I still look back at the days where the choices were fewer and leather handles were king and the stockman ruled. Too many choices today and too little time.

Now which model to purchase, probably the micarta because I have to have the toughest of the 3. After all, the leather will shrink, the Kraton will get dammaged and twist on the tang. What a sickness!!

another solution: one knife, the handle of which has all three materials !!

Cheers,

Carl

p.s. hey, I didn't say nor promise it was necessarily a "good" solution.....

These knives have very sharp blades. Very exciting tools. No matter the handle nor the color. But I prefer serrations often.

:D Why the hard time???
Buy all 3!!!:D

Yeah after all you can afford it. Even still buy these. The S1= leather, the S2= Micarta and for the Kraton anything with Seki Japan written on it.
