So what is the deal with Busse and Scrap Yard?

Somewhat of a newbie collector/enthusiast and these knives seem to just be unobtainable. Do these companies do a lot of limited releases or is everything just back ordered? When I go to Scrap Yard they are completely sold out of most products and Busse is only listing 2 products currently. I have seen so many awesome blades that have come from both of these distributors and I'm just wondering if anybody can bring me up to date.

You're at the right place. Go to the exchange and pick you out something. Don't forget about swamp rats though.

Scrapyard currently has two knives listed on their web site. A limited edition new model, the war dog ant the sword the scrapizashi.
Once you order delivery time varies. A neck knife is also available called the scrapivore.
The war dog is orders only and has not been released yet, just three days old.
Hope it helps and welcome to the Busse kin world.

Busse, Swamp Rat, and Scrap Yard all basically offer limited releases only. They'll usually announce new models on the forums, or introduce them at various shows (like Blade), and you'll have some limited amount of time to order one.

So once a model stops being made, it may never be offered again. There are some exceptions to this, most notably that some currently unavailable models are usually produced for the various shows. Blade & Knob Creek are probably the main shows, and usually have a good/great selection, depending on what you're after.

Jerry Busse will usually post pics a few days before a shoe to give people an idea of what will be offered. There's usually a pre-show sale at the hotel the night before, for those attending the shows. This gives people an opportunity to interact with the Busse folks, and basically hang out, eat, drink, and what not.

So if you are going to a show... you'll want to go to the pre-show sale for the best chance to get what you want. If you're not going to a show, you'll need to try and line up a proxy, which is somebody that orders or buys the knife on your behalf at the show. How the actual proxying takes place is up to the proxy. Otherwise, you can usually expect something to be offered on the exchange after the show, usually at higher than show prices.

Basic rule of thumb... pay attention to what's being offered by Busse, Swamp Rat, and Scrap Yard at any given time. If the opportunity is there to get it from the factory store or as a factory pre-order, then get it. That way, you'll get the best prices. Or try to get something from a show at show (usually factory+sales tax) prices. Lastly, hang out in the exchange & trade forums and see what comes up.

Then there are we mere mortals - who won't learn the 'secret hand shake' - and find something 'close' - like a BK2/RC5 - sufficient. Sure - 1095 steel is like ALCOA wrap next to INFI blade steel, reportedly an alloy of meteorites and M1 Abrams turret armor, but so what? After all, I don't have that many extra towels to wrap Busse's in - the usual way they are carried. My knives came with sheaths. Besides, I don't need to slice a Studebaker - or filet a Fleetliner. Maybe I could 'shatter a Saturn'... they are plastic bodied, aren't they?

Seriously, they are nice knives... just not that nice - to me.

Oh, come on. You have seen several of my Busses, and never was one wrapped in a towel. (Admittedly, they were mostly in the cardboard sleeve Busse ships 'em in.) When I've got seven Busse users I would be foolish to try to use the other 73, just to make a point. Just keep on buying your Bark Rivers with half a man-sized handle.

(For all you Bark River lovers, don't get upset. I admit they are great knives. Just poking at Stainz a little. Love ya, man.)

Well, after reading this thread, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/839944-BK2-test-the-final-part-(LOTS-of-pictures) , I have to say, if you need your knife to do more than this, maybe you got the wrong tool for the job. When all was said & done, only about a 32nd of an inch had to be removed to get a good edge again. Pretty impressive to me. Made in America, for $61+ $7 shipping.

I hereby dub the BK2 the "Poor Man's Busse". Use a BK2 to achieve fame and glory, then use your newfound wealth to buy a Busse or three just because you can. May I remind everyone that the Beckers dont come in 31 flavors? Sure, they are great...but boring. There is more to knife buying than mere utility. How satisfied is anyone with having only one lover?

Busse supplies the magic iron ore, you have to supply the smelting process, shaping, heat treating, handle, sharpening and sheath. Only joking I own a few, great knives and worth every penny.
