So what is the REAL shelf life of an MRE?

Similar Vet story--went through training in '72 and we were getting Korea war vintage C-Rats. Not all was great, but all edible.

Tinned meat over 100 years old has been tested to be still edible. (edible, in that you can get nourishment and not get sick, which is not the same as tasting good)

In theory, tinned food has a infinite lifetime as long as it isn't exposed to heat & air from denting holes. The canning process kills all germs which is what causes spoilage.

Same for MRE's, except technology has replaced the can with plastic.

1986 ate C-rats from the 60s and 70s. they were MUCH better than the MREs from 85-88, never did get a taste for them.

The new MREs are great. The lunch strikefforce or whatever the hell they are/were called sucked. It was only about 500 cal which left you screwed if you had nothing in the truck and got stuck somewhere. We avoided them and stockpiled MREs.*

the new ones are better(i hear), I'd still rather eat from the street vendors than eat the MREs.:barf:
