So, what made you decide to carry a knife?

I don't know if this has been asked before, but what made you decide to carry a knife? I can remember this one time way back when, my uncle, cousin, and I were watching this tv show Crime Story. The detectives discovered a bomb in a box that was wraped in paper and tied with string. One of the detectives pulled out a small pocket knife, a little peanut most likley, and proceded to open the box, and that's when my uncle said "That's why you should always carry a knife, you never know when you'll need it." I've carried a knife (or two) everyday since then. just wonderin

Same kind of thing for me. It just started from noticing how useful they are and how much you need them. That combined with my insane lust for knives has led me to carry a knife every day I possibly can.

I started carrying a knife ever since i got sick of always buying things in those damned unopenable-without-a-samurai-sword-blisters and having to wait till i got home to open it. I've been fishing ever since i was little and always carried a knife to cut line and such and realizing that it always came in handy to be able to cut things. I carry a knife as a tool first and self defense second.

Ever since I was little, because I thought they were cool. When I got older I got better knives (instead of SAK rip-offs with blades almost as dull as a butter knife's), and everywhere I go (outside of school) I take a knife. You never know when you're gonna need one is right!

I was informed of the idea when I was very young that a knife was the most useful tool ever devised by man and it just stuck. :D

I don't know why I started carrying a knife, I was 7-8 y/o when I did start carrying a knife. My Mom got me started carrying a knife. Perhaps it was for camping purposes, I really don't remember!! Good topic though!

When I was 8 or 9 my Grandfather gave me a Case 3 blade of some sort as a gift. I cut open packages, mail, whittled sticks, and fought dragons with that knife.

where I came from, a boy carried a knife. It was just expected that he would have one. If he didn't, he was looked on as "strange". It was just a natural part of growing up in the country.

To this day, I refuse to capitulate to the idea that I must respect rude questions about why I carry one and must explain myself. my attitude is, "if you don't carry one, what is wrong with you?"

I carry an SAK for the assortment of tools - blade, flat & phillips screwdriver, light, bottle opener, etc. It ends up being handy for something on a daily basis. Like one poster, there's always some packaging to open that the blade can be used for. And there's always staples to remove without having a staple remover around.

It's not for self-defense or anything like that. I have some tactical knives but I have those mainly for disaster preparedness and 2nd line of home defense (after firepower, of course). I don't live in tough areas or hang out in tough areas (ghettos, bars, docks, etc.) that I might have been through when I was younger, and I practice the best defense -- which is avoidance.

For me, it was a family thing i guess.

Grew up on a small ranch, had first pocket knife, sak i believe by time i was 6, ,then bowie, then came the air rifle, then powder and so on.

It was very normal to have a couple knives, fixed an folding, an rifles when i was young, simply loved it an miss the times.

I , in imho believe it was because we were taught Respect early then,so we had a moral obligation to ourselves aswell as others to be proper, or face the wrath of Dad.(Whom would say something like, if someone was out of line, i brought you into this world, I can take you out!)

lol,it was all good, seems to be lost today however,o well, i really digress.

Now today, i have my son, whom is in his early teens, an has started collecting knives and has experienced similiar talks with me about respect an proper place an times and the tradition continues.

I seen my dad recently, whom lives out of town, an is elderly but still two fisted at anything he does, still posses's the knife i bought for him fathers day some many years ago. I was showing him one of my benchmades an he whipped out his an said, you ain't got nothing on mine kid, its the best.
(Sharp an in good shape i noticed.)

Near broke me into tears, he has packed it religously since then, retired the little mother pearl folder, for the 2 bladed schrade he recieved that fathers day. i remember thinking, he'd like it, never thought or knew how much he'd love it.

Anyhow, thats me story an im stickin to it lol, wind bag out.

I don't know that the decision to carry a knife was a conscious one or not. My grandfather taught me to use, respect and care for a knife at a very young age. When I wasn't in school, I had a knife with me. In high school it was ok to have a knife, so I usually carried an SAK there (Columbine happened my senior year, so no more knife for the last several months).

A knife is just a part of my daily outfit. I get dressed and drop a knife in my pocket without even thinking about it.

I got into knives and flashlights around the same time (more knives than flashlights, at the time, though). I started getting into pyrotechnics; you need a flashlight to see what you're doing in the dark, and the knife for trimming fuse, casings, bags, and so on.

I've always liked knives and carried one as a child (great for the kid that likes to explore the woods, old houses, etc). For a while, as an adult, I did not carry a knife. One day, I realized how often I went to the kitchen for a blade to open a package, wished I had a knife to cut a sandwich at work or do the odd jobs at home. Since then, at least one (more often, 2, or 3 or 4) has been with me. I wondered how I survived without one in those non-knife years.

I'm not sure why I started. I suppose it's because I was arround them all the time since I was very young. Everyone had one it was normal. I didnt really cary much when I was in school since they were banned from the premises, but now I do. I carry everyday and play with them everyday and read this forum everyday. Dont really post much but, it is still the best website on the net.

Yeah, knives are fun :D :D :D

At 11 years of age I got caught up in a then current kid kraze, yo-yos. One day there were two representatives of the Duncan yo-yo company performing demonstrations at a local department store, doing show-off tricks and selling their products to the mesmerized youngsters, among them me. But wait! If you selected the top of the line Duncan, one of the guys would do a custom carving on the wooden disk. While the demonstrator deftly carved a sailboat and palm tree on my new yo-yo, I became fascinated with his knife, a small three bladed stockman. Noted to self; I needed one of these. Within the year, I joined the Boy Scouts, got a pocket knife and haven't been without one since.

Although I have owned several knives over years, none of them have been a stockman.

BTW, I can still do "Cat in the Cradle", "Around the World" and "Walking the Dog."

Blisterpacks...
ironic since my first knife came in one

Yeah! My first was a LM Wave, so early on I had situations where tools in general on your person is very handy.

First gen Wave's actions were pretty hard/tight, so that was a motivation to get a folder.

I've always been facinated with (plastic) swords since I was a kid. But it wasn't until my 7th grade year I bought my first Western dagger Model #777 that I became truly facinated with knives, then it's never a day without a handy tool.

I had always been fascinated with knives, didn't carry one until 9th grade I think, when I started carrying a Vic Classic. This soon expanded into a small collection (3 or so) of dirt cheap folding knives from the hardware store I work at. I finally ended up getting some "real" knives when I turned 16, and the rest is history.
