I am 62 and where I grew up, NE Pa, carrying a knife as a boy was nearly universal. Had a knife when I was 5 or 6 and wore a pair of leather boots with a knife pocket on the side. It sounds unbelievable now, but these were the boots that I wore to school. (anyone here recall that style boot?) I carried a muskrat skinner for decades and still have the one I bought 50 years ago.
To characterize the region a little bit for those in urban areas, the local paper in that area still has multiple pages during hunting season with a title something like "Local Kills". Those pages have photo after photo of hunters with their dead deer and an occasional black bear. Not exactly politically correct in most places today. No wonder though, that kids carried knives!
