So, what toxic plant are we looking at here?

Do you recognize this toxic plant? It can be dangerous to small children or even adults.

Nightshade or Belladonna (Atropa bella-donna)

Same family as tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes... but not nearly as good to eat. heh

Crap, I have one of those in my yard.

Me too, a few of them actually. Easier to photograph the stages that way and I want the photos for my website. So, I let a few live at the edge of a clearing. My kids know that it is poisonous and don't touch it.

The first two shots came from the yard, the second two from yesterday's hike.

Nightshade family.

I don't generally use flowers for id, but looking at the leaves and the hair, I guess hairy nightshade. If so, it should have a strong smell that will stay on your hands if you handle it.

Edit:

I looked again. That last pic shows spines. It's horse nettle.

jimsom weed?

oh wait, that's a datura... mmm

common tomato? ;) i'd need to see better leaf detail.

as they develop :>

Solanum species....

Horse Nettle?

Doc

CJ65 and Doc nailed it. It is horse nettle. I updated the pics to more show the life cycle of the plant. The entire plant sort of screams leave me alone...but any plant in the woods that produces a fruit in the summer and you can still find that fruit uneaten the next spring is a real clue. If the animals will not eat this fruit, you sure shouldn't.

Wow Mistwalker!

Love the detail in those photos.

Thanks man, glad you like them!

It's all about the dosage.... ;-)

Yes, and weight... but that applies to a lot of things :)

Your second guess is right :)

Ah I see... the deadly BK11 CSM! Oh, I'm wrong? Okay; I kid, I kid. Nightshade, extremely toxic.

Yes, in the right hands...under the right circumstances I suppose :)

I'll do datura later on, not up good yet :)

More like tomatoes than anything else... That's why it worries me when I find it on elementary school grounds and public parks where kids play.

A couple of older pics of Datura though

Looks like Black Nightshade to me. Does it have berries?

It does produce fruit, I updated the pics.

Yep, Horse Nettle.

Those thorns make hauling square bales interesting when it gets baled up in the hay.

The green berries tend to be the most poisonous part of the plant.

But Jimsonweed is often considered to be more toxic, and is hallucinogenic.
