So, what toxic plant are we looking at here?

Yep, Horse Nettle.

Those thorns make hauling square bales interesting when it gets baled up in the hay.

The green berries tend to be the most poisonous part of the plant.

But Jimsonweed is often considered to be more toxic, and is hallucinogenic.

I wish I knew a better way to word this, I don't want to come off like a pompous ass because I'm not, honestly :) I suppose I should have worded the title differently, I knew what it was when I posted it and was just trying to start some discussion and promote some awareness. I find this stuff in lots of areas where kids play and there are always surprised parents when I ask them if they know what it is.

Both are bad, but Jimsom weed is some bad stuff. The alkaloids are hallucinogenic and are bad on the kidneys. People have died from ingesting it, and people have required kidney transplants....really mean stuff.

I never doubted you knew what it was.

I'm all for making people aware of poisonous plants. I'd like to see this thread expanded to include more toxic plants.

Great thread and great pics.

Thanks, I was hoping that didn't come out wrong. I was thinking about asking if we could do a sticky on toxic plants or something so it didn't just get buried, or other than that I was going to do a different thread on each of the plants I covered.

unfortunatley, i've never seen jimsom weed or horse nettle...

daturas are very popular plants though to grow on purpose. beautiful trumpet flowers, weird fruit. many an "old gardener lady" has been found with fully dilated pupils and drooling after contacting this plant. oops :)

around here we get spiny cucumbers, which tend to freak people out thinking they are datura.

i need a primer on poison hemlock vs the safe looking varieties as well - i've never SEEN poison hemlock that i know of, just queen anne's lace and the usual clones.

seems like 80% of flower gardens are toxic. now why is that?

Actually, we tried to do that on a couple of different occasions in W&SS, but they didn't last too long. They can be seen here and here. Might work better here in the Becker sub-forum, though, because of the level of participation.

Interesting that you've never seen either considering their dispersion in the US.

Much of the gardens are poisonous...and much of the hated weeds are edible...crazy worl huh?

Considering the way BF operates I'm not sure it's doable here at all. Unless made sticky it will sink and become buried, or the photos will cease to exist or something. That's why I am doing it on a couple of other forums where I actually have some say so in content and how things are done :)

CA has a few species of Solanum, some are weeds, and 2 are actually nursery grown and used in landscapes. The flowers are a dead give away. Pun intended har har.

As a general rule of thumb i don't eat anything with thorns. what's a good source mistwalker to learn plant identification?

Gee Clich, you'd be missing out on Rose Hips - huge amounts of Vitamin C, Hawthorn - 2 off the top of my head. Also, Black Raspberry, etc.

Hey Mistwalker. That's some very interesting stuff. I'm ashamed to be introducing myself here on your post considering we were both in attendence at Ethans gathering. But with everything going on our paths never crossed. (That and Gutsy wouldn't give ya up! Haha) are there any good books specifically on eidible plants that you could recomend?

i agree.i think it's weird how people go crazy at the sight of weeds and plant poisonous flowers in their yards. mistwalker made a good point earlier about poisonous plants on school grounds and what scares me the most is the families with small children that have poisonous household plants indoors where they have easy access .

this whole wild edible and non edible plant stuff is kind of alot to take in . tis a vast subject, atleast for me it is but i'm learning .
