I have my big EDM stones, I put my sand paper on big bars of steel like Burt does, I grind to 600, I use WD40 when sanding and grinding with my stones... but I still have swirls and scratches down by my plunge. All I want is a nice even, hand rubbed finish for showing off the nice hamons I get now.
help please!

I had bought several of the EDM stones in various grits several years ago and always ended up with deep scratches after using them even with the finer grits. Wet and dry paper as far as I'm concerned is the best bet.

Like Raymond, I used to use stones for refining my finish....from 240X up.
The things to remember about hand finishing are that the stones will cut
deeper than paper of the same grit, and do NOT change direction with
your sanding strokes.....you'll get those annoying "J" marks. Push hard, and
bring it back light...or the other way around.

As in many delicate things...lubrication can make it much more enjoyable.

Use windex, oil, or soapy water - you need something to keep the grit in a slurry.

Stacy's correct about the lube. I favor WD-40.

thanks guys... I do use WD40 with the stones and my paper. I get a very nice finish along the entire blade except at the plunge.

I've noticed that if I use the stones to 600 and then use paper 600, I get a very nice finish...everywhere but the plunge. I will try using some paper after each grit perhaps and see what that accomplishes. I was hoping to get rid of all the paper use though...

When you get to the final grit, don't change direction. Push or pull until you leave the blade. Then repeat.

Just a question... Is the WD-40 (or any other known lubricants used for the purpose of hand sanding) toxic to use with hand finishing for an extended period and getting it all over your skin? I've used it too, but question whether it should be used with gloved hands or maybe other precautions.
