So what's the skinny on the Rodent 4 (411)?

It's tough waiting... But from all the positive reviews here, I'm sure it'll be worth it. I emailed both the Swamp and Scrapyard (waiting on the Rodent 9 & 4 as well as the 711 & 511) and they both told me the same, between 2 to 6 weeks. I ordered two weeks ago if that gives you an idea. I know I'll like the Swamp Rat oferrings, but these are my first knives from the Yard. I'm curious how I'll like the handles since they're not micarta slabs like everything else I've owned. What sold me on them was the steel and, (dare I bring this up) the destruction test on you tube. While the destruction test I saw wasn't of these two particular blades, it was another Scrapyard blade. I usually don't find any enjoyment in watching that guys videos, but was researching Scrapyard's knives and It came up in a search. That guy (who shall remain nameless) actually beat the snot out of the handle with a 5# hammer while it was in a vise. Nothing I would ever do to a knife, but it speaks volumes about the lateral strength of the blade in that area of the knife (which was my concern). Not trying to bring on a debate about destruction tests, but this one answered my questions none the less.

Ti, you got a great selection of blades coming to you. I don't think anyone has the rodent four yet so your right there with us all.congrats!

Plus here is a little teaser picture to hold you over until you get yours :D

You're killing me sar5... It's bad enough stating at these empty Kydex sheaths I got from azwelke in preparation. How do you like the Res-C handles on your Scrapyards? What was the edge like when you received them?

I can't speak for Sar5, but I bought a 711 as my first entry into the Bussekin and I was a bit nervous about how I would feel about the Res C, which I expected to feel super soft and cheap. I have to say that I'm blown away by the stuff, it feels pretty much like a car tire. It's a little tacky, but incredibly solid with very little give. It also absorbs shock in a way I doubt micarta or G10 slabs could have. In fact, I liked the Res C so much that I will probably wait for the 911 to be my first "big chopper" even though there's no set release on it yet.

As for the edge, I've heard mixed input about sharpness. Mine came very, very sharp (from Denny, who others have had good results from as well), able to cleanly slice through paper no problem. I think the edge was convexed (I was able to touch it up very easily on my Work Sharp which usually takes time to change a V edge over to convex) but I'm no expert on these things. However, the secondary bevel is pretty obtuse obtuse, I think at least 50 degrees inclusive. It's no going to shave hair or phonebook paper from the factory, but I'm sure if you knocked some of the shoulder off, it would slice even better. I don't really need it to be that delicate, so I'm going to leave it as is for edge durability.

Thanks for the input! I'm still learning how to expect new releases from these guys - both SwampRat and scrapyard. I definitely want to keep in the loop for future purchases/collecting.

I love the large resc handles like on the 711, dog father etc. The strange thing is the 511 handle feels alitle small o me, but on the new 311 it feels perfect. I guess the blade length, balance has something to o with it.

My 711, 311, 511 came very sharp. It can be it or miss at times, but if your not satisfied with the edge you can contact the maker and they will make it right. Some of the sharpeners are better than other.

Good luck and post pics when you get em!

Woolley, post some pics when they're finished. I would love to see them!

Will do

Res C is a guilty pleasure for me. I've owned and still own a lot of different Busse kin plus all other manner of production and custom knives and I've got to admit.......Nothing feels quiet like Res C on a "working knife". If your knives stay in a drawer except to shave arm hair than it doesn’t really make a difference, but if I'm doing any type of intense work with a blade, I prefer Res C. Just my opinion of course.

I can not wait, I loved the feel of these at Blade last year.

Very nice in the hand, for me because the scales are a lot thinner than the R 911

watching mail box now.

I thought they were holding the funds since I ordered...now I don't think so.... hmmm????

they put a preauth on your card that removes itself about a week later and then you get a charge (ding) that will be the actual pos charge when your item goes to ship. usually about 4-6 weeks after order placement. so make sure your balance is good to go at ship time or no go.

Not me, charged right away, but that's ok. I just received shipping notification for the Rodent 9. Thinking I'll see it on Mon or Tuesday next week.

Have owned a couple SRKW blades but have been out of the game for a year or so. Still have my RMD and HRLM though...2 HRLMs actually. Love that blade. Came back..saw the new Rodent 4 and said I'z gotz to have me some new cheeze! Ordered the R4 ASAP! Looking forward to this new blade! :eagerness:
