So when do we start talking about the 2016 Forum Knife?

I like the idea of making it easy this time around if there's some people on board for the undertaking of the process. An existing pattern in a never been done before style would fit the bill nicely.

Like a 15 Barlow with "BF" stamped on it.

When are they normally done by? How bout all us users find a way to make it happen instead of relying on mods for it. How many are normally made? Here's what I propose. A three blade knife. Main blade the size of a buck 110 with the two other blades using a single spring. Slip joint obviously. One being a wharncliffe and one being something else. Be the absolute perfect hunting knife because buck 110 is nice for skinning and if you get bored use a different blade to carve wood or something. If only we had someone willing to produce that.

I would love to see something that was a nod to yesteryear, like a doctor's knife with spatula.

UPDATE: Or a tang folder, along the lines of a peasant knife, only not as bare bones.

Either one of those would be an instant conversation piece, even among non-knife aficionados.

Forum knife. Tricky proposition. Lots of issues that those who are new to this don't know about. Not sure if it will happen or not.
►The rights to the name "BladeForums" belong to the owner of the site. So his permission to use it has to be obtained each year. Part of the requirement is that the forum knife is required to be strictly non-profit. And the owner needs to be satisfied that no problems can arise that would reflect poorly on BF or that might cause someone to try to sue him.
►If a dealer were to step up to do this, he won't make any money, so he'd be making a sizable donation of time and energy. Taking and tracking orders, tracking the knives, making sure all orders are filled. That is a HUGE job.
►If a dealer were not handling it, then some method of taking orders, tracking the knives, and getting the knives shipped would have to be found. I don't know about any of you folks, but my bank account will not handle that sort of complexity.
►If memory serves, last year we sold 300 knives at about ~$80 ea. Being responsible for $24,000 is no little thing. If something goes wrong, somebody could be out a whole lot of money. Let me say here and now that neither Gary nor I are able to shoulder that sort of burden. So there is that issue to worry about as well. If an established dealer were not involved, then some method would need to be found of guaranteeing the money is secure.
There's other issues, but that'll do for now.

SO

If you want to make this an idea thread for knives, that sounds fun.
Coming up with schemes for how this will work, not so much.
Assuming this will happen this year might be a longish shot. Maybe. Maybe not.
And pushing for anything to happen right away, well, it ain't happening right away.

How would a group buy option from one of the supporting knife makers fly? I see some leanings toward a traditional fixed, which I would love too, made by one of the awesome makers here with no bf markings on the blade but a guaranted buy of 100 knives in a cool steel with nice covers. Say M4 and cocobolo in a sharp finger for $100-150? with a leather sheath.

But then, it wouldn't really be a forum knife then would it?

On January 8, 2015 Barry announced that everyone has received their 2015 knife. That was less then 3 weeks ago. The first poll for the 2015 knife was held in June.

To the best of my knowledge there has been no discussion about if or how a 2016 knife might happen.

In other words it's way too early to start a serious discussion. I'm sure Frank will weigh in later also.

I was wondering how quickly this important post would simply be ignored. Oh, straight away!

For new posters, the two posts above are the ones to read and take notice of

How about a 'What pattern would you like to see' thread, then we're spared all the theorizing about how a forum knife may or may not happen, which are likely to be based more on wishful thinking than reality? Sorry to be pouring cold water on this thread, but in the unlikely event that someone IS thinking of taking this huge project on, a thread like last year's, with all the demands and clamouring (and a certain amount of plain whining) is unlikely to encourage them to do so in my opinion. It's still January, as Gary said, the 2015 forum knives were only received by everyone three weeks ago, to describe last year's thread as "precipitously early" is overly generous in my opinion!

OP: close this thread and start one just like Jack suggested as the "What pattern would you like to see in 2016 as the Trad Forum Knife". That way everyone can be happy. We'll keep it strictly to posting about the pattern and not about the actual process. Report any post to be removed that goes outside this requirement and it will keep it from "running amok".

Actually, the speculations about last year's knife began on the 26th October 2014;) I had only had my 2014 knife 2 days or so at the time.:D True, the serious polls began later but I don't see the harm in a speculation thread about what pattern would be liked. As I wrote earlier, it certainly is a fraught project but one that has not yet produced a universal dud, just sayin'

Thanks, Will

About my fantasy for a forum knife, I think a simpler design slippie or a nice fixed blade would rock. The next paycheck with some spare money will go to a premium membership for me, because I feel that this site has done a lot more for me than the price. I'd also like to say that I'm thankful for everyone who donates their time and effort to the forum knives .

Cheers,
Connor

I think this is a good call. I can't do that from my phone at the moment, but I agree. I will start a new thread and close this one when I get to a computer.

My original intention was to start a pattern discussion, not a how to make it happen thread. I like hearing what people would like to see, I learn more about traditionals that way than any other way.

That discussion is fun, people getting stressed out, demanding, or coming up with wild brainstorms is not nearly as fun.

 I think that's the way to go, otherwise, at least every other page, there'll be people wanting to know where to send their money or asking when it's going to be ready!

IMO the thread should be started about a month and a half from the order date, it makes Things sooo much easier for the folks who do allll the work. Just sayin :o

Regards

Robin
