I have noticed since I met "you all" my spidey senses have improved and I can turn away from knives I would have thrown money at in a heartbeat. When exactly did I become an aficionado? How can one tell he (or she) has crossed over to the dark side?

I owe it all to you!

When you start asking yourself questions like these. :D

Maybe when you get educated.

You realize, that there are people who design knives, there are companies who develop knives and there are others.
You start to recognize similarities and start to ask yourself.
Then there is the world of the material of wich the dreams are made of. So stainles, surgical, etc.. won't do any longer.
I started saving on a special knife.

When you learn what makes a knife good, better, "best"...and you reeeeally appreciate that.

I knew for sure when. I started thinking that my fav. folder isnt good enough because it doesnt have a super steel or better handle materials. Even though it has kicked every other knife out of my pocket, I still have these thoughts because of what ive learned here. I almost was happier not knowing .

I laughed out loud at that! Exactly what I was talking about. I doubt I will ever own a $500 knife, but I never thought my mountain bike would cost $3,000 either!!

I doubt I will ever own a $500 knife

I feel this way also but... I never thought id get married , own a house and have kids either lol . So ill probably own a 500$ knife at some point.

When you begin to regret past purchases. "Darn, those knives aren't that great. I could have bought a good knife for what I paid for those three."

'Course it's all a matter of degree. I still buy relatively inexpensive knives.

I think it was when I started to I.D. other people's knives from a distance!! You can tell brands by the shape of the pocket clip!! :o People at work ask me "is this a good knife?".

When you are able to justify (personally) and explain the need for a knife over $200 to friends/sheeple or the wife. I have to explain to friends with $18 dollar pocket knives why I spent over 200 on the knife I'm carrying that day and why its special. People are always willing to drop $100 on dinner for two, or spend 60k on a nice sports car or even a super expensive watch. Yet, they can't understand the design, quality and craftsmanship of all things including knives.

I'm certainly a snob, but not quite an aficionado yet.

^^^ When I got my first Benchmade. A 943. It wasn't my favorite knife but it was my first real "High End" knife. After that, I had to have more. I wouldn't really call us snobs. I would call us people who appreciate quality.
A year ago, I would have never thought that I would have bought a knife over $50...
Now I have:
CRK Large Sebenza 21
ZT 0560
Spyderco Chokwe
Spyderco Para2
Spyderco Native 4
Spyderco Chaparral
Spyderco Blue Smallfly
....

Good luck on saying you'll never own a knife close to the $500 range.. you will. :D

Its funny because a couple years ago I thought spending 50 bucks on a knife was alot (it was, given my job and expenses at the time). At that point I had been carrying the cheap knives i'd gotten for christmas from my uncle or ones i'd seen for a bargain at chinamart. After finding the other knife guys/gals on youtube and here at the forums I have learned a lot about what I like in a knife and what works for me. My quality knife collection has grown and those cheaper knives found their way into storage or into other hands. Just last night I put down a little over $200 on a ZT thats been haunting me. Will I ever take the plunge and drop 4-500 on a Strider, Sebenza, or a custom? Yeah. Maybe not anytime soon or all that often, but I will.

I'm not a snob. I might have a small collection, but they all get used. It's fun to find a new one to play with. But in the end, they are sharp tools.
