So who is GIVING knives this hoiday season?

I may only give one knife as a gift this Christmas. My dad likes my Buck 373 and 55 so i'll browse around and pick him some sorta small traditional type knife.

My son is getting both titanium and carbon fiber CRKT M16's and a CRKT contrail. My dad is getting a Marble's Cowboy that he has been wanting and I picked up a carbon fiber CRKT M16 for my best friend. Santa is bringing me a few CRKT's and a Tinives knife.

Anybody give a knife as a present?

SAKs make great gifts for almost anyone.

However you might want to be aware of an old tradition/custom/superstition that giving a knife signifies the cutting/severing of friendship, and this might be important to some people - YMMV.

The custom is to ask for a very small demonination - like a penny - so in effect the person is "buying" the knife from you.

Although it sounds silly - I quite like it, as it makes for good conversation/discussion.

Take a look at these BFC threads -

Old tradition about giving knives as a gift

my father in law is French and when he gave me a knife he told me to give him a coin. he didnt know what the meaning was, but had always done it that way.

my theory was that its not really a present then; its an exchange between men that doesn't constitute any kind of debt, as would a gift. just a thought.

My son and brother-in-law are both getting serrated Spyderco Meerkats and my daughter a SAK.
I like the coin idea and think I will use that.

My dad, who is an avid sailor and diver even in his mid '60s, is getting a Spyderco Pacific Salt.

I got a Spyderco Native from Wal-Devil for my dad and one-handed locking SAK (can't remember model right now) for my mom.

I'm giving my father in law a Strider GB with Coyote brown scales. I usually give him a high end knife every year for Christmas, and he's become fond of my Striders as of late.

I rescaled a couple of Victorinox Classics with some pretty cedar. Came out nice as far as finish goes, but fit was unacceptable. That is, the wood was pretty and smooth and polished, but the scales didn't lay properly against the metal. So I'm giving those to my little brothers-in-law (11 and 9). My second completed handmade knife, a puukko style hunter in 1095, is going to my father-in-law.

I'm giving an AL Mar Nomad to my brother in law. He's an avid hunter and currently gets all his sharp things from Wally World. I'm hoping the VG-10 and open, rock solid construction blow his mind a bit. It's tough though, I keep opening the box to play with it, whispering about "precious, my precious" . . he better hope I don't have a change of heart before Christmas.
