I rencently started working wiht 1095 and have just finished my first bowie out of it.

I've usally been using 1084 but I wanted to start using something with more carbon. I looked in the stickys and did some searching, but never found how long of a soak 1095 needs. I plan on heat treating myself wiht my propane forge so I can't hold a soak temp for more than about 5-7 minutes. Also what would be the best household liquid to use as a quench? Should I just keep using vegetable or should I get one of my freinds 5 gallon buckets of old moter oil?

I would stick with something like conola oil. Soak recommended is about 10 minutes. Some parks or something similar would be a better choice. I am curious what the problem is with 1084 which would be a better choice if you cant hold a soak time.

10 minutes is often recommended, so you would be close enough. Good grief NO! on the motor oil. Warmed canola oil is your best bet other than commercial quench oil. If you are adventurous, and a gambler, you might consider brine. One box sea salt or Kosher, in 2 gallons water, but it may cause the blade to break or crack. Well HTed 1084 makes a superior blade to poorly done 1095. The carbon difference is not that great, but the HT requirements for 1095 are much more demanding than 1084.

OK thanks. I really was just wanting to change up and use something different for once. Concerning my quench, I would love to be able to buy some Parks 50 but I just can't afford it at the moment so I guess it will still be canola.

Make sure you use ENOUGH canola, too. For a large blade like that, you should have two gallons or more.
