SOB - bricks or no?

I'm considering getting an SOB, and I'm wondering about the "brick wall" pattern cut into the scales - I feel like the scales are prettier without all the grooves, and I suspect one could order an SOB without them, but I'm wondering if they contribute significantly to having "enough" grip on the knife (and yes, "enough" is very subjective)... does it make more of a difference on (smoother?) G10 handles vs. (coarser?) Micarta handles? Does anyone find them at all uncomfortable? Am I the only one to get caught up in such trivial details?

You might want to consider hand shaped black or brown canvas. You can request it from the shop. It's very comfortable, and grippier than smooth G10. The brick pattern on G10 might get a little rough for extended use.

I have two with brick pattern and they feel great. That said, one was a show knife and one was a Ganza; given a choice I would have gone hand shaped canvas micarta all the way. The belly on the handle pretty much locks your grip so slippage shouldn't be an issue. Good luck in your decision

Bricks all the way.
If you do not like them you can sand them down pretty easily

Bricks fit the character of the SOB stylistically in a rugged, blue-collar, industrial way which also captures part of the Busse spirit & mystique...

OTOH... if you're purely going for straight up ergos-- hand smoothed canvas micarta is tough to beat...

SO WITH ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL...the upside of keeping the style is greater than any real ( or perceived ) loss of grip / comfort gained by erasing the pattern...

PLUS... you will be losing collector / resale value if you de-brick, if that's a consideration for you now or for the future...

Therefore because of the stated reasons... my vote is...AN EMPHATIC :thumbup::thumbup: KEEP THE BUSSE BRICKS!!!

To me it`s a matter of personal preferences - have severel Busses with micarta handle slabs, without pattern in the handles, works just fine all of them - no issues here, when it comes to grippiness.

It`s your Busse and your choise - go for it if you want it like that

Good luck :D

I vote for the bricks :thumbup::)

Nice shot of a sanded Proto, Ragnerok! Looks like mine (oh, well, if it also had a large choil and a thumbrest and bird's beak butt). The pattern felt good, but visually it was not for me. As stated above, this is a very easy thing to "correct" if you end up deciding you don't like it. I removed the pattern and hand-shaped her for a custom fit - even taking down the beer belly a bit. This knife is an all around champ and with it I will never part!

The brick sheath really sets it off. I wish you would stop with all the cool sheath patterns. You are forcing me to buy more knives just to get the sheaths.

RussMo that bumble bee is sweeeet !! The color just looks great ! Makes me think of a nice wedge of lime in a glass of tequila :D:D:D

Hey Gus, like duramax said,"Makes me think of a nice wedge of lime in a glass of tequila". I'd expect a drink down on the beach in your neck of the woods. :D :p

Thanks Bro's!!!

Thanks everyone, you've collectively managed to convince me to try the bricks. I think Garth's, "just enough texture to give it grip but smooth enough that you dont really feel it", kind of sealed the deal. Now I just have to decide between black canvas Micarta, and blue/black G10.

Ragnerok, darn you for sidetracking me with that, what is it? Snakeskin Cultellus? That little knife looks *really* nice. And Garth, one knife can have more than one outfit. Just saying. Oh, and the bumble bee is very pretty, but... flat slab scales just really don't say "Busse" to me.

Thanks all!

Now to decide on a color and get my order in. If I order early enough in the day, I can still get it delivered this year, right?
