Social media? How did you discover your interest in knives?

Before social media existed I always had and liked knives. But i have learnt a ton about knives from watching YouTube. Especially nutnfancy.

Growing up, men carried knives. And there were plenty of things to cut, so some kids carried knives - I was one of 'em. And I've never looked back... I just keep finding things to cut... And this here is as social as my media gets - thanks, but no thanks.

SharpByCoop, a custom knifemaker, posed a question about how to reach out to and find potential customers over in Custom & Handmade Knives that got me thinking... forgive the wall of text but I think there is a really interesting conversation to be had here. How did you discover knives; and now, how do you decide which ones to buy? How important are places like bladeforums?

I've been interested in arms and armor since I was a kid, it's still a subject that I find really interesting and devote much time to reading and studying. My interest in knives derives from my interest in edged weapons...the first knife I bought with my own money was Khukuri House kukri, a blade with a long history of use in warfare. Since then, I've bought many other knives, some specifically weapons, others definitely not intended as such.

And this site is immensely helpful when it comes to knife info-when I buy a knife, either a tool I might carry for daily use, or something that is flat out a weapon that I can say with certainty I will never use, I want something good. Basically, I want my blades to be functional and effective in use, even if I will never actually be using them. And reading here I've learned what materials and companies are more questionable than others, I've read testing of products I won't personally do(I don't live in an environment than needs a parang, that said, when I buy a parang, I want to know that it would hold up if taken to that environment...here I can find reviews of parangs from people who have actually taken them out and used them in the field), I can keep up to date with what's coming out and when, it's just a really great source of info.

Instagram and Reddit otoh I avoid like the plague.

Information exchange online is juuuust like information exchange face to face: the value depends on who is participating. Prior to the internet explosion, access to quality information was hit or miss. Just as now, a lot of garbage was passed along and accepted without question. The advantage/disadvantage today is that information travels faster. Good or bad, we can access it instantly.

Discussion boards and youtube are probably the best and worst.

Example of good:
Sharpening walk throughs speeding up the learning curve.

Example of bad:
"Needs more gimping so your thumb locks in while thrusting in tactical situations!"

I don't do social sites like Facebook, etc. I have had some friends beg me to join up but it does not interest me. I do not text, tweet or tag either. NO cellular telephone here either. I do type on a computer though!

I never bought or sold on Ebay, E something else? or Amazon.

We buy in person, we (Mainly my husband!) have bought from a few custom knife makers in person, we have bought knives from small and large stores and we have had a store special order a few knives for us too.

Social sites do not sell knives in MY opinion but FORUMS like this one that help keep up the discussion of knives help sell knives!

Some people do consider forums like this one 'social sites' like old boards from the 90's too.

Posts and pictures help!

I can read something HERE, look at a picture and an explanation of that knife and RESEARCH IT. My research is going to the knife maker's LINK or name mentioned. I can LOOK up a company that sells knives and the MANUFACTURER of x, y or z knives. That will tell me more.

Disclaimer: I do a LOT of research online in various subject matters and in libraries too!

I have more interest in knives now than a few years ago. I did have a small knife on me in the past (For many years after I got married to my late husband.) so having a knife with me is not 'new'. To me - it was just a knife of a few that I had for protection. It was a tool.

The difference is that what I carry NOW has changed due to my age (64) and due to other changes in my lifestyle. Plus where I live now is different compared to growing up on the East Coast in the 50's and 60's or living in the boonies in farm/lake country - Great Lakes region with my late husband for 30 some years.

My late Dad, my late husband, my older brother and my MT husband have always carried a knife or two on them. So did other people in my life like my late Mom and some other mentors - small scissors and/or a small knife.

I do think that this forum is a great resource for all people, not only collectors, and especially for Newbies! It is great for people who want to learn more about their own knives, for buying their FIRST knife and/or when they decide to go into other types of knives at any age. It is a great tool for young adults too.

My husband has his few OLDER favorite knives that he will keep but he has even gone into some other knives now.

I have changed my 'carry' knife too. What used to suit me and my hands in my 20's has changed.

The internet is quite new for me having gone through life with mainly rotary phones and party lines. No social media except coming to this site, the telephone works very well and is what I am used to. I went through life learning about knives by what others carry on their belts and using. From this I made my own choices. I learned a lot here with the wealth of information available and have bought knives through recommended sources through this site.
