Hey All! Like, Bill Engvall I get Random Thoughts once in a while and I had one today. so I thought I'd ask... I was wonderin how you explain to customers they're holding onto a bone from a large mammals penis,:barf: without them freaking out, and dropping the knife. Also have anybody ever had any bad reactions from customers at knife shows when they found out what they we're holding? :foot::barf:

you know that is a good question, i kinda was wondering that as well last night. i was showing bubba-doll some pictures of some oosik handles and i was like man that is some nice handle material. but then i had to telll her what it was . I honestly don't see any difference between that and any other part of the animal that we use for knife making, not that we use lots of walrus parts to make knives but you get my drift.

Exactly JT! a bone is a bone to me but it's the issue that it's a pubic bone. and most folks I know of might find it distastefull. but while we're on the subject would putting a oosik handle on a boning knife be a "boner knife" then?

I always try to have at least one knife on my table with an osic handle. There's at least one good laugh after the person is told what the handle is but have never once had a person drop the knife in shock. There's a reason a male walrus has a tool that is ready to go. No osic, no walrus ivory........

More appropriate name would be a "boner boning knife"...
I'm not sure I really like the sound of that, though...

I have always wondered if the word oosic is actually an Inuit or Aleut pidgin word derived from the reaction of the first English speaker to be told what it was that he was holding "EWWWWW!!!!! SICK!!!!!!:D

Hmmm maybe I should call my Oosic fighter a boner knife. I have had a couple interesting reactions, one of which was flat disbelief from a woman who is a nurse. How would any thing git thru it etc etc. LOL

You got to tell the customer, even if they hold the handle in their hand for a long time it will not swell up.HEHEHEHEHEHE!!

or you could always make false claims like saying that if you rub that hunter for long enough, it will turn into a bowie:D

My mobile slaughter guy, One Shot Willie, had an interesting job for me about the time I first got an interest in making knives. He had a bulls dick that he had already threaded onto a stainless steel rod that was shaped in the form of a "J". By the condition of it I could tell he'd had it around for a few years. There was even evidence of a dog using it as a chew toy. My job was to put a handle on it. It took me a while to even come up with an idea that might work but ended up doing a stacked leather handle. I had made Willie his pride and joy. He sure loved to show it off......

When I first read the title to this thread I was thinking maybey this was something you should talk to a therapist about.

I have seen bull dick canes and at the farm/pet store my wife works at they sell bullies. Bullies are of course bull dicks for dogs to chew on. Bullies are often purchased by older ladies, not sure why that would be.

I doubt that any place knives are sold, shows etc., there would be alot of people who are overly sensitive about oosik.

I would not wip one out at say a family planning office or a PETA function and start showing it off.

Just don't let any idiots hold the knife when you tell them. You know they would sure drop it?:eek:
Most knife guys at a show will know ossic by looking at it?

Here is a double edge bowie I made a few years back.
( A gun dealer in south east Kansas has this knife, said he doesn't care if he never sells it, I think he likes it ? :) )

I made a few folders with it also, but have not used any here for a while.

This isn't really relivaint, but I felt like adding this:

I have had the distict pleasure of making a sale because it was oosic, the woman couldn't put it down! She then asked her husband "how come yours doesn't get this hard?"
It was worth every penny I paid.

A couple of years ago I was at a local knife show and was standing at a makers table and overheard a woman ask the guy at the next table over, "what is this handle material". I turned and looked and she had picked up a knife with an Oosik handle. The maker completly lost it, he could not say anything for stuttering and stammering. I had to turn away to keep from laughing at the two of them. His face had turned red and she had the funniest look on her face

I would think that these would be hard to come by and I'm not sure they would rise to the occasion. But then again if it was up to the knifemakers we would be able to take it in hand and polish it to a condition were we would be proud to show it off to anyone who would like to see it.
