Socks, specifically boot socks?

REI brand socks wear well, but they smell like a Saint Bernard that's been romping in a swamp when you wash them.

Merino wool socks. I have and wear the Cabela's brand and Browning brand. Browning is cheaper and comes in 3 pack. But I can always return Cabela's brand for new one's once they wear out(lifetime warranty) :) And yes a good pair of boots will help a lot!! I wear the mid weight socks year round with no issues. Unless it's really cold I wear heavy weight one's. I prefer the Cabela's brand. Which is Cabela's Ultimate 11" Medium-Weight Crew Wool Socks

I'm a medic at a pretty busy service. I don't get to take my boots off very often. It is killing my feet. For example, yesterday I put my boots on at 445, I took them off for about an hour at 2000, and then just took them off again at 945 this morning. Needless to say, my dogs are beat! I switched to mid weight wool socks about four months ago, and love them, but it seems like I could fine tune my system a bit more to make me more comfortable. I'm not sure that mid weight socks are the most appropriate for summer wear. I am moving to Haix Airpower XR1 boots in the next couple weeks, so there's that. Might make a difference in your suggestion, might not. I'm interested to hear from medics, fire, leo, hikers, anyone who keeps their boots on for long periods and outs their feet through Hell. Open to suggestions!

Any quality wool socks, BUT the most important thing is to NOT wear the same boots two days in a row. Get at least two pair and rotate them. If you have a chance to take them off after several hours as you mention above, put on the alternate pair of boots (and fresh socks too) and put ANTIFUNGAL powder in the boots you took off. Most foot problems and aching feet are due to either boots/shoes not fitting properly or being worn out. Your feet will tell you before any other indicator. Again, have at least TWO pair of boots and rotate them. Never wear the same pair day after day after day and hope your feet will be okay and not ache and not gather fungus.

leghog beat me to it.

I was going to recommend Merrel Moab Ventilator's, but it seems you need more heavy duty boots than that.

Try and take your boots off at half-shift, air them and your feet, put on some powder and fresh socks. With your next pair of boots, consider getting a half to full size larger to fine tune your sock combination but also to allow circulation.

I've had good experience with the REI made liner and mid-weight wool socks. Give Fox River ragg wool sock a try. Also check out Custom Woolen Mills Ltd. products:

You should look into some SuperFeet insoles as well.

They help ALOT

One other thing that gets overlooked, especially once your feet start to swell over the day, is that even a small amount of compression can really limit the circulation to the skin. healthy people can over-come it to a point but over time it adds up. so one layer or two, whatever it takes to get a good fit, and adjust as needed.

I spent the last half of my working life as a machinist, and was on my feet all day standing in front of a mill or lathe. I tried all kinds of things, but in the end, the brand boot or shoe or socks didn't make as big a difference as what kind of insert was in them.

First, the factory inserts are trash. Period. They put in just what is needed to get them out the door. I ended up using Spenco insoles. They come in different styles, for support or cushioning, or both. As I got older, I needed the cushion effect. It made all the difference in the world to me. I'd tried Danner boots, Timberland boots, lots of boots. In the end, I ended up going with a cheap pair of 69.95 Magnum boots, with the Spenco full length cushioned insoles. I now could spend all day in front of that Bridgeport mill without my feet killing me.

I think lots of people have problems with their feet because modern shoes are so poorly designed. Look at how many commercials are on for the Doctor Sholl's Gellin' insoles. People want comfort, but the shoe companies are cutting a lot of corners for the bigger profit, so we suffer, or buy after market inserts.

Try the Spenco's. And a light wool sock with boots laced more loosely.
