SOCOM or SERE?? You decide..........

I have narrowed it down to these two for a multi-purpose daily carry. Either the SERE 2000 or the Old SOCOM M/A.

What do you guys think? I am going to go with the most responses.

Thanks for your help.

I wish I could help you out. I haven't handled either one yet, but the Sere is a rel favorite here on Bladeforums. I don't think you can really go wrong with either choice. I have been thinking about getting a Sere or Chinook myself. Good knife hunting and Merry Christmas.

IMHO you cannot go wrong with either knife, as both are very well made. I don't have a SERE yet (will be getting one soon) but have handled one on several occasions. I think that it has the SOCOM beat in terms of handle comfort. The rounded edges are very favorable in my book. Also, if you want a deep carrying folder, the SERE's clip is positioned on the handle so that no part of the handle is sticking out above the pocket, whereas the SOCOM does stick out. It's not a bad thing, but more along the lines of personal preference. Hope this info helps and Merry Christmas!

Well, I bought the SOCOM Elite S/A and a Combat Talon II and I think I am going to sell both and either buy the SERE or old SOCOM. I think I am leaning more toward the SERE. If anyone is interested in the CTII or the Elite, let me know, I need to pay for my new Wilson Combat Protector.

I bought the socom elite because it has a bigger blade. Lock up is solid. Great grip with the kryton inserts. A light knife. The finish and overall quality is superb. I saw pics of the socom elite with a chisle grind tanto blade. It will probably come out next year. I have not handled the al mar because not too many places carry it compared to the micro techs.

Hi. I recently bought a SERE 2000. I too was considering a Micro Tec product as an alternative. I went with the SERE because it was highly thought of by other forum members and because it was less expensive.

Now that I've had it a couple of weeks, I can give you my impressions. First, it is a brute of a knife. Very hefty and it seems very strong and well made in the areas that count. The liner lock on mine fully engages the blade at the left edge of the blade. The lines are made of stainless steel so hopefully they will wear better than the softer titanium. The action is very smooth and fast. The thumb studs are easily accessed with either hand. So in the areas that really matter to me, i.e., strength, durability, and smoothness of action, this knife is great.

On the down side, some of the knife's attributes are troublesome too. Because the knife is a brute, it is also quite heavy, in my opinion, for everyday carry.

The clip attaches at the end of the grip so the knife rides very low in the pocket. This makes for a slow draw if that is important to you. As Jeff Randall correctly pointed out in an earlier thread, the SERE 2000 is not designed to be a tactical knife. Therefore, the fact the knife is slow into action should not be held against it.

My knife came with some cosmetic flaws which were disappointing, give AL Mar's reputation for quality control. However, these flaws do not affect function.

My knife did not arrive as sharp as I would have liked. I've used my Sharpmaker to resolve the problem.

I hope my comments have been helpful. Good luck.

Regarding the SOCOM, I've never owned one, but plan to remedy that problem too in the not to distant future.
