Sod buster style knives

knifeswapper knifeswapper I really like the looks of that knife and especially the bocote version!

It's not going to win any "Best of Show" awards, but usable economy knives are getting hard to source.

I ordered the micarta the other day, think I ordered it on Wednesday or Thursday (can't remember for sure) and it was here Monday. Pretty fast shipping IMO.

My impressions of the knife so far which you can take with a grain of salt.

The blade was sharp when it arrived, but the grind was messed up on the left side "edge up". Mainly from the belly to the tip.
Not a big deal tho 10 minutes on my artic fox field stone and that was taken care of.

The handle is a little smoother than what I would like on a working knife, which can easily be fixed with some sandpaper.

The handle is much thicker than what I would like especially for a single blade knife, but... a lot of people like bigger handles.

The blade isn't centered... but it's a working knife.

I know most of what I've just wrote may all seem negative, but at the price point you "get what you pay for" but I really think this will be a solid knife

I haven't got the chance to use this knife yet, but I'm sure it will perform the way it should/supposed to. Over all so far I'm happy with the knife. I will be going back to work tomorrow for two weeks so she'll get a workout for sure then.
While at work I use a knife several times a day, cutting rope, straps (plastic and nylon), rubber hose, zip ties, plastic wrap, there's just never any telling what I'll be cutting throughout the day.

I can report back latter on as to the edge retention if anyone is interested, but again I really think this will be a solid working knife.

Sounds on par with Case fit and finish, which is just fine by me for a sod buster, because you ain't getting anything close to micarta and D2 on a case. The thicker handle is also part of what I love about sodbusters, not like a Barlow in that regard. Good grip for harder work.

Show us some pictures when you can!

Will do sir. Trying to get everything packed up to head to work in the morning, along with trying to help my daughter complete a Social Studies Fair project. But once I get to work and get settled in I'll get y'all some pictures of it.

Just to give a little prespective on size I laid it beside my Case Trapper.

It's as long as a case trapper

It is probably 3/16" thicker than the case trapper "the handle"

Closed sitting on their back it is as tall as the trapper maybe ever 1/16" taller. (referring to from back to spine when closed) if that makes any sense

The knife I received was not comparable to a Case sodbuster in fit and finish. It may have been an anomaly, but the spring was weak and it had more blade play than I could overlook, even for the price. I suspect that I got one that wasn't the best example.

I have a Palo Santo. Mine has no blade play and decent snap, considering the action is very gritty. Hopefully when I have a chance to give it a good flushing, that will be rectified.

Probably the biggest shortcoming I noted was the blade rubs the liner.

The covers are beautiful and I love D2. I’ve had pretty good luck with Case Sodnusters when it comes to fit and finish. I’m not sure how much more it would have cost to refine it a bit more to get it to the level of Case, but for a working knife I can live with it shortcomings.

I ordered a micarta and a Bocote, both very similar. Both dead centered, good grinds with more of a cam tang pull with some resemblance of a half stop? Regardless, very easy to pinch open with a gloved hand which is perfect for this knife. If you work construction or in an industrial setting in sub-zero weather, this is a real plus. No biggie if your $30 knife hits the concrete, life goes on. The handle is quite thick but man it is comfy when using.

F & F is not stellar but rather where Mike stated it would be, i.e., a little rough. Action, a little rough. Blade, pretty damn good. The grind is thin with little work needed to sharpen the edge to 30 degree inclusive. The steel takes an awesome edge with very little work for D2 which I likened to being softer than Queen takes their D2. I have also found the steel stains much more readily than Queen's which further reinforces this theory.

All in all, I am pretty happy with these for a knife in the $30-$35 range with a supposedly high grade steel. Edge holding opinions will have to wait until I have had more time with the knife. In the meantime, one will be riding in my truck console. One will be gifted to my non-knife loving brother who beats the crap out of his knives as only a farmer can do. If it gets a thumbs up from him, Mike has a real winner on his hands here.

Well darn this forum. It has been a while since I bought a knife, a couple of weeks at least, but that micarta grabbed me and I put in an order. It will probably be a Christmas gift for my son, but not before I have CF’d and CE’d it.

Is the Maserin a FFG? I carried my case sodbuster for a couple of days this week and remembering how much I dislike hollow grind.

Hey guys and gals. I have been looking at the case sodbusters for a while now. After ding some searching on here I got turned on to the Queen CC due to the D2. Now I have never owned anything with D2 but from the way everyone talks about its edge holding ability I'd like to give it a try, although I do understand it will be harder to sharpen.

Problem is every where I've looked online says discontinued.

Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I could buy one please? Thank you

Just by coincidence you post this enquiry one day before the release of this new D2 sodbuster knife?

I seem to recall a thread a while back trying to generate interest in this knife by suggesting there was a market need for it. I contributed some thoughts without realising the thread was actually about a specific knife order that a dealer wanted to generate interest in.

Feels a bit like marketing disguised as forum discussion- or am I overreading?

The thread you recall was a conversation about the possible production of this exact knife, but I think it was actually fairly clear in that if you take a couple seconds to refresh your memory. I used the feedback and opinions from that thread to finalize a production plan on the project.

As to the OP and this thread, don't know him from Adam and this post was coincidental. And, this may surprise some, but I work very hard to get real world user opinion and expectation. If, when you give the respective information, you do not want me to take it as actionable information - you probably will want to refrain from posting it. It is appreciated, but my plan is generally to acknowledge it whether I have a large disclaimer stating such or not.

Although I am fairly thick skinned - when thinly veiled accusations of ethical shortcomings arise, I do take them personally. But I am starting to understand why some factories and dealers simply don't engage in conversations.

I think your over reading it sir. I was looking for a sod buster preferably in D2, and this knife was mentioned.
Everyone else seems to write what they think of a certain product "strops, sharpeners, knives, or what ever else it may be" nothing to do with marketing I don't know the folks who designed or built this knife, just like I don't know anyone else on this form on a personal level. I just bought a product and wrote what I thought about it just like many others do on this site.
