My favorite mail lady just stopped by the house and dropped off a box I'd been waiting for from the frozen environs of Bemidji, MN.
Earlier this week I saw a posting by Keith ("KR") Johnson for a sodbuster he had built and that he was offering in the "folders for sale" area here on the forums.
Having become somewhat of a devotee of the sodbuster (relatively speaking, it's dangerous to presume on this sub-forum) I couldn't resist its allure while alternately weighing the image and the very reasonable price for a hand made knife.
So, though the mail took a day longer than they should have, in the end all is right with the world as this sodbuster is a little gem.
Here are some stats:
Scales: Ivory Micarta
Steel: 1095 @ ~59-60 Rc
Weight: 1 7/8 oz.
Thickness: .39"
Closed: ~3.75"
Blade Length: 2.9" (tip to scales)
Spine: .072"
The Case Sodbuster Jr, in comparison features Delrin scales, Chrome Vanadium Steel. weighs 2 oz., is .54" across the scales, 3 5/8" long and .075" at the spine.
...And here are a few images of the knife itself and compared to a Case Sodbuster Jr.
What's obvious from the images is how true to the Case Sodbuster Keith was able to remain while creating a very light and supremely thin and pocketable knife.
Fit and finish are quite good. Backspring is strong, pivot oversized and blade well centered.
What's not obvious from the images is just how wickedly sharp this little razor is. Keith knows just a little something about sharp!
For those of you who may hanker after a custom version of the classic sodbuster without breaking the bank, it would be worth your while to contact Keith either by PM here on the site (KR Johnson) or via email at keith@greatriverforge.com
