Hi All. Can anyone give a brief history on the Sodbuster! Where the knife originated, what do the Germans call the knife, etc. I do not have Search. Thanks!
Rolf

According to Mr. Levine the Sodbuster started as the Schlachtmesser zum Zulegen which translates to folding butcher knife. Case copied this design and called it the Sodbuster. Mr Levine dates these types of knives to the early 20th century or earlier.

Well you never know, I assumed it was farmers in the mid-west making houses out of sod and using that knife to cut up the sod. Boy, I was way off. Nice to know the real history of the knife.

There was a good article about Sodbusters (by Stephen Dick) in the March 2008 issue of Tactical Knives. I've referred back to it for my own use several times recently; if I had started out with a Sodbuster years ago, I don't know if I'd have developed much of an interest in knives.

Orca---My thoughts are the same. The Soddie is one tough, versatile knife design!

It's also a timeless design as it's traditional but in no way dated.A knife that's as much at home for work now as it was a century ago:thumbup:

I just put my Spyderco in the drawer. The Red Soddie is in my pocket. OH NO!!

I hope mine comes soon Lycosa. My case CV has been getting a workout the last 2 days. We had a tornado here in middle Georgia early yesterday morning. What a Mothers Day.

Hope all is well with you & your family. I grew up back in NC, SC, & lived in VA for awhile, too. I don't remember tornadoes, but the hurricanes, and even some of the regular summer storms, will sure put the fear of God in you.

Prayers going up for you folks . . .

Question: what kind of workout is the little peanut getting, and how's it holding up? Getting through that kind of situation with such a small knife is "cause for pause" for me. Maybe I'm carrying too much? Hmmmmmm . . .

thx - cpr

ps - sounds like you need a new knife to lighten the mood. :p

JT---Getting on this Forum, got me in trouble right off the bat! Once the Soddie Thing entered my head, that was it. I took a trip right down memory lane and had to get one! Thanks, All!
Plucker---You take care down there.

I have had my Soddie since the 70s and it has always been a go to knife when heavy cutting was involved. I never bothered with a fixed blade as the Soddie could do everything I needed done up to the point where a hatchet would take over. Now I find myself thinking more about getting a Jr as well. I just don't know which way to go, my Soddie is black, do I match it or do I go with yellow to compliment my Peanut and Barehead Trapper? Or do I go with a different color altogether? I do know it will need to be carbon steel, not stainless....don't care if it is new or used. I have even thought about going custom and going with a non-traditional scale material like warthog or hippo tusk.

I need to put some more thought into this...
