Looking for some fob ideas for a sodbuster type knife. Some of you guys have amazing skills making lanyards/fobs, so I was kind of interested to see what's being used. I need some ideas and what better place to look?

Thanks

Though not a sodbuster, I like these because they are cheap and, I have some string if needed. Paracord is made if a bunch of small ropes inside a woven sheath... now you have lots of string.... kinda goes well with a work knife.

Mine is very simple, can send you a bead like this if you want one?

No Skills on my part Jennifer but here they are regardless:o

Thanks guys. Seems paracord is the "go to" choice - at least so far. Does seem to go well with a work knife, Woodrow. Off to dig mine out - have some around here. Woodrow and Paul, are those the same knots (is that what they're called) that you both are using? Does it have a specific name so I can look for "how to" instructions?
This could take me some practice! :D. Paul, I'd say those qualify as skills.
Jack, your version might be more my speed - I'll see after I try it! Thanks for the offer for a bead. I believe I have a couple here I can use. :)
Thanks again.

Paul is clearly the KING of the sod buster lanyard....here is my meager contribution. This is part of my weekend carry...

Pretty basic. The bail is made by GEC and I got it from Mike at collectorknives. The lanyard is a simple style made by a forum member (Knife Crazied) and traded to me.

It's called a "noose knot" because it's basically a hangman's noose, but you pull the loop. I do mine slightly differently as I just pull through one of the loops for easy removal on a bail or key ring.

Jone,

At risk of your head 'sploding, here's a thread that might be of interest:

Show Us Your Knot Tying

As with many older threads, picture links may be broken in some of the earlier posts, but it remains a treasure trove.

(Filed under, "The things one finds if one wanders into a different subforum." :D I peek in every now and then, including to check in on Whatcha Whittlin These Days?, then scurry back here to Traditional.... ;))

rinos and pjake - Thanks. Really like those options as well. Note to self - find a cool bead!

Modoc Ed - thanks. Might need to check into the bail. Thanks for the reminder - those had slipped my mind.

Woodrow - thanks for the info and links. Going to finally check them out now that the kids are down. I will have to concentrate!

pertinux - Thanks for warning me before I ventured out there. After this week my head actually might explode. I'll check out that thread as well as the other links posted here. I think I might be busy for a little while tonight.

Thanks again for all the pics, links and info.

 That's a great SAK / Soddie combo Paul :)

Thanks Jeff:)

Thanks Peter but I'm pretty redundant knot wise:D

Jennifer the knot I always tie is simplistic...has to be for me to use it:D it's a Chris Reeves Knot. There's a very ez tutorial on on their website:thumbup:

That's an Overhand Knot Jennifer! :D ;)[/QUOTE]

Definitely! Lots of nice ideas though

I have a copy of a knot-tying article I did years ago somewhere, but the knots are climbing knots.

Thanks, Paul, for the info on the Chris Reeves knot.

Jack, thanks. I think I'm going try several including the overhand knot. Got a few SAKs that might benefit from a fob as well.

Thanks to you all.

It's hard to go wrong with that one! :D I use a figure-of-eight or figure-of-nine sometimes to give a bit of bulk if I'm not using a bead, but I should learn some new knots really! :D

The paracord on that one is 'stripped', it has had the cord removed. It came with the knife, which was kindly gifted to me by Meako. It arrived with the lanyard tied with a double-fisherman's knot

Jack, that fob on the bullnose is simple but I bet, effective. And as far as learning to tie more knots - you're ahead of me. About the only knots I tie are on my shoelaces. But I'm learning. :D

Thanks Jennifer, yeah it works fine. I used to be a climber and mountainner, and a fisherman in my youth, so I tend to still use the same knots. A figure-of-eight is good for just about anything. If you think you'll be using knots regularly, buy yourself a yard of climbing rope, and you'll soon be tying them with your eyes closed. A friend of mine used to keep a length of rope next to his bath for this purpose! :D

I love the handmade beads that get shown here, but ready-made ones can be picked up in craft and jewellery shops, and often cheaper than some of the more expensive ones aimed at us knife fools! ;)

Another endorsement of the Chris Reeve hangman's noose. Since I learned to do that one, I think ANYONE can! (Is it true that the hangman's noose traditionally included 13 "wraps" around the loop?)

Some very cool lanyards here!
