Hi all,
I'm looking for a Sodbuster knife.
What brand and type do you suggest, and why?
Thanks in advance,
Alfredo

Case CV ...because it holds a better edge than the Tru Sharp version. Or, if you want to wait out for the GEC with the O1 blade and orange scales.

Moore Maker, bone or delrin. Gene Ingram, Queen Country Cousin - in that very order :)

Then look at the new Bullnose GEC, but only then

I'd go with the Case. It's a well-built knife that's a better slicer than the other sodbuster-style knives I've owned.

Case. I've never used any of the others... they're more expensive and I didn't really see a need. I'd like to try a vintage Herder sodbuster though.

The GEC version, if there will in fact be another run, is likely at least a few months out.

Case makes a good Sodbuster. I own two.

The left one is black, the right one is blue.

I'm partial to the Queen Country Cousins followed by the Case in CV.

The thing I find strange about the case is how the ricasso is so long. Its so much length before you get to the blade. Also the back right at the back square seems to really sit high when closed.

I didn't notice either at first, now I can't get past it. Nothing against them, they just don't do it for me.

Dont buy the queen if you dont have diamond sharpeners, you will have to reprofile it from the factory if it came like my stockman. If you dont mind resharpening it then the queen will probably be a better knife. D2 doesnt take a patina all that great if that is important to you though but holds a edge for a very long time.
Case:Very in expensive and easy to sharpen but not amazing fit and finish
Queen: Will probably come extremely dull but will hold a edge alot better and has better rust resistance and alot better finishing.

I own a full size carbon Case soddy and its a great knife...but this HERDER knife is better imo....more comfortable handle, very strong snap and the blade takes and holds a wicked edge longer...just my 0.2.....FES

Well Ed...that was a one hour "Show and Tell" for me. Changed my perception of a soddie forever. :D

I've wondered about the extra ricasso length on the Case, too. It hasn't always been that way.

Here are some pics comparing two of my large Case soddies, a 1970 2138 (carbon steel) and a 2009 2138 SS. The 1970 has a shorter ricasso, and a longer cutting edge. To top that, the blade is also significantly thicker on the 1970 version, seen in the 3rd photo:

I use my '06 Case Tru-Sharp fullsize every day and love it. I recommend it.
Easy to sharpen, low maintenence, holds an edge for a decently long time, nice snap, good slicer. It's a great back pocket knife.
