Sodbuster

Actually, I like the longer Ricasso on some of the Case Sod Busters because it allows you to "choke up" on the blade with your index finger for close/fine work or with your thumb when the blade is held upside down while skinning/zipping a squirrel or rabbit.

As to the top, rear of the tang riding high above the frame, the Case Sod Busters are no different than other knives of this type including the newest rendition by GEC. Some ride a little higher than others but they all ride high.

I appreciate your feedback, but with a shorter riccaso you don't have to choke up because the edge is already where it needs to be, and the GEC rides MUCH lower from what I am seeing. Im not saying the Case isn't a good knife, I just don't like a few of the characteristics of the design is all.

I don't bash brands or knives I don't prefer, and I do appreciate your input Ed.

Thanks

Also, check out some of the customs in the thread you linked. I went through that a few months ago, but again last night. A lot of the customs seem to have the blade ride pretty low in the handle when closed. I know I am comparing $$$ customs to a 20 dollar Case, but its just design I am talking about. Not quality of construction or materials.

I have the Case Sodbuster Jr. CV in Yellow Delrin. I carry this knife mostly in my working jacket pocket or my toolbox. The CV keeps a very fine edge and an easy sharping.

A soddie is a working knife, to me. It gets use in nearly every cutting purpose. I don´t use it for food prep.

The prize is pretty hot, for that knife.

Kind regards
Andi

The Robert Klaas Brown Mule sodbuster is IMO a fine entry level sodbuster for very little money also it's hard to go wrong with a Case I'm particularly fond of the yellow Delrin myself.

Agree on the recommendation for the AG Russell Sodbusters. I have the smaller of the two and it spends more time in my pocket than any other knife. Very, very well made for a knife at three or four times the price that this sells for.

Chris.

According to B.Levine, the CASE Sodbuster is actually quite a recent pattern, about 1967 or thereabouts, a knock-off of the Herder wood handled folding Butcher's knife from the late C19th. These wood handled workman's knives, Klaas Coalminer etc are traditional German and Dutch patterns. Why not look into these?

More exotic but similar in look is the Kizlyar 'Irbis' from Russia. A Walnut handled knife that is liner lock and thumb-stud, it's true, but you can see its origins in a simple wood handled folder.

That said, the CASE jr is a very useful all tasks pocket knife, inexpensive and compact. Böker, Argentina, do one as well, a bit crude but undeniably tough and workmanlike.

For the kind of work I'm talking about, it is nice to "choke up" no matter how long the ricasso -- less chance of the blade folding.

Where did you get the bashing? I certainly wasn't bashing any knives. I have the new GEC rendition of the Sod Buster but now that I've had a longer period to compare them I do like my Case Sod Buster better despite it's slightly shorter length and the fact that the top, rear of the tang rides prouder that the GEC when closed.

No, I felt as though you were on the defensive about the Case. So to say I felt as though you may have taken my criticism as bashing the case. That was not my intent.

'If there's something strange, in your neighbourhood. Who yer gonna call........?!' Sorry;)

I also like the longer ricasso. Sometimes I rest my index finger on it during certain cutting applications.
